CORROSION CAUSES AND PREVENTION

Corrosion is the process of wearing away the surface of a metal due to chemical reaction by the
surroundings or its environment. There are many ways to combat the effects that is caused by corrosion
but to be able to solve it, we need first to know how it start or what it cause or trigger to create rust in
the surface of the material. The most common type of corrosion is the formation of rust in the surface of
the material. There are many causes on how corrosion occur. It can be by hydrogen exposure, oxygen,
electric currents, and exposure to dirt or bacteria. Knowing the causes of corrosion and how to limit or
prevent exposure to these causes is an important way to protect them.

WET AND DRY CORROSION

There are two types of attack on the metals for causing corrosion, the dry and wet corrosion. Dry
Corrosion is the chemical reaction between metal and gas or liquid in the absence of electrolytes. It
occurs when there is no water or moisture to aid the corrosion, and the metal oxidizes with the
atmosphere alone. If the electrolyte causing corrosion is an aqueous solution of acid, salt or alkali, it is
known as the wet corrosion. It is the most common form of corrosion. It occurs in the presence of water
and electrolyte.

Corrosion Studies of Selected Metals from Industrial Effluent in Pune MIDC, India

Corrosion is one of the worst enemies of an industry like a cancer cell because it continuously developed
for many years but still remain unsolved or undetected. When observed it is too late to amend for the
damages it causes. Corrosion has impacts on the economy directly, in the form of replacement costs of
equipment and corroded structures and indirectly , as maintenance and operating cost due to failures
and shut down of equipment, structures, pipe lines and through contaminating the products and
affecting the safety and reliability .

Corrosive Water Problems

Many homes have pipes, solders and/or plumbing fixtures made from copper, lead or other metals.
Corrosive water can sometimes dissolve in these types of metals that results to health-related problems
in drinking water. In certain cases, corrosion can be severe enough to cause leaks in the plumbing
system.

Corrosive water can dissolve high concentrations of copper from pipes and fixtures. Copper can cause
bluish-green stains in sinks and a metallic taste to water, especially with water in contact with pipes for
several hours (overnight). Lead was a common component of solders used in plumbing systems until it
was banned in 1991. If your home was built prior to 1991 and has a metal plumbing system, it is likely
that some lead is present. Lead can cause many health effects in adults and children. Lead is harmful at
concentrations in water that can only be detected by water testing.
