These statements may be written for organizations or for individual departments.

VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT

Written statement of vision and mission statement including philosophy, purpose, objective and
operational plans are blueprint for the effective management of an organization including health
institution. Development of vision and mission philosophy, purpose, objective and operational
plans are the components of planning at each level of management. Each department should have
vision and mission, philosophy, objective and operational plans.

VISION AND VALUE STATEMENT

A vision statement is vivid idealized descriptions of the desired outcomes that inspires, energizes
and help to create a mental picture of a target. It could be a vision of a part of your life, or the
outcome of a project or goal. The purpose is to create a mental picture charge with emotion that
can service to energizes and inspire you and your team. Vision is a long term aspiration. Vision
statement also defines the organization purpose, in terms of the organization’s value.

STEPS TO CREATE VISION STATEMENT

1. Identify organization mission


2. Uncover the real, human value in that mission
3. Identify what you, your customer and other stake holders will value most about how your
organization will achieve this mission
4. Distil these into the value that your organization has or should have.
5. Combine mission and value, and polish the words until you have a vision statement
inspiring enough to energize and motivate people inside and outside your organization.

VISION STATEMENT GUIDELINES:

 Describe outcomes that should be at least for five to ten years


 It should focus on the desired outcome of the project/goal at its completion date.
 Summarize vision using a powerful phrase in the first paragraph of vision statement
 It should be in a simple memorable phrase
 Vision statement can be much longer than mission statement
 Draw on the belief, mission and environment of the organization
 Describe in the present tense
 It should describe the best possible outcome
 Make vision statement emotional
 Add sensory details to vision statement

MISSION STATEMENT

A mission statement is a concise explanation of the organization's reason for existence. It


describes the organization's purpose and its overall intention. The mission statement supports the
vision and serves to communicate purpose and direction to employees, customers, vendors and
other stakeholders.
Questions to consider when drafting mission statements could include:

 What is our organization's purpose?


 Why does our organization exist?

Mission statement defines the organizations purpose and primary objectives. Its prime function is
internal, to define the key measure of the organization’s success.

1. Short, unambiguous and clear

2. Dynamic, give direction to frame philosophy and objectives

3. Include ethics, principles and standards

4. Reflects the vision and values

5. Organizational uniqueness

BENEFITS OF A MISSION STATEMENT

 Mission of the organization gives a way or a source to vision


 A clear definition of mission make helps to define the goal and objective of the
organization
 Foundation for setting priorities, strategies, plan and work assignment
 Starting point for designing managerial job and managerial structure
 Incorporate the culture of the organization
 Make the employees more committed and able

STEPS TO CREATE MISSION STATEMENT

 Identify organization wining idea


 Identify the key measures of organizational success
 Combine wining idea and success measures into a tangible and measurable goal
 Have a concise and precise statement of mission, which expresses your ideas, measure
and desired result.

Example of vision and mission statement

Name of the institute: St. Stephen’s hospital and college of nursing

Vision

 St. Stephen’s Hospital, working in the spirit of Christ, is dedicated to the building of a
healthy, equitable society, thus contributing to the development of the nation.

Mission

 St. Stephen’s Hospital is committed to serving all sections of society in the spirit of
Christ, by providing quality, affordable healthcare as well as training healthcare
professionals of excellence who would embody the Christian values of selfless service
rendered with compassion and love.
 The Hospital also has the mandate to undertake medical research towards the
improvement of health outcomes.
