Objective A: Knowing and understanding
Level 1-2
In our daily life, we are surrounded by different things, such as trees, sand, houses,
people etc. These Things can be called matter and all the matter is made up from atoms.
Specific arrangement of atoms forms different substances with different proprieties.
Understanding the proprieties of these substances is very important as they are crucial
when comes to use them according to our needs.

1. Recall the definition of matter. (1mk)

3. An atom is found in the Group VIIA, Period 4 in the periodic table.
i) Using the periodic table in page 2, identify the name of this element. (1mk)

4. Knowing that an atom has the following electronic configuration: 2,8,8,2.
i) Suggest how this atom can gain it stability. (2mk)

5. The diagram below, represents the bonding which occur between atoms oxygen and
Hydrogen atom to form a molecule of water:

3
i) Observing the diagram above, identify the Valence electrons of oxygen after
bonding with the hydrogen atoms. (2mks)

ii)Suggest the type of bond formed between atoms of oxygen and hydrogen based
on the diagram above. (1mks)

Using the information given in the diagram above, apply your judgment to
identify the number of electrons the oxygen atom shares with each atom of
hydrogen. (2mks)

Level 3-4
6. A student has been told that one of the most important element on earth can be found in
form of different isotopes. One of this element isotopes has the atomic mass of 17, and 9
neutrons.
i) Knowing that the atomic mass (A) of an element is determined by the sum of Protons
(p) and neutrons (n), Apply scientific knowledge to determine the atomic number of
this element. (3mks)

Level 5-6
Earth's natural greenhouse effect is critical to supporting life, and initially was a precursor to
life moving out of the ocean onto land. Human activities, however, mainly the burning of fossil
fuels and clearcutting of forests, have accelerated the greenhouse effect and caused global
warming.
Some of gases responsible of greenhouse effect such as NO------2, CO2 and SO2, are related to
the acid rain formation, making these gases double-harmful to our planet.
7. Outline the formation process of acid rain taking as an example one (1) of the gases cited
above. Don’t forget to suggest where this gas comes from and the equation of formation
of the acid. 5 (mks)

Solving problem in unfamiliar situation

Airplanes have revolutionized our world, making the time to travel from one point to another
very short.

The table below shows different type of metals and their proprieties:

Metal Melting Density Resistance to Flexibility Conduction of

point (oC) sea water heat
(g/cm3)
Aluminum 660 2.70 bad good good
Iron 1538 7.87 bad good good
Titanium 1668 4.51 good good good
Platinum 1768 21.45 good good bad

10. Taking in consideration the information given in the table, analyse which metal is most
suitable to be used for Airplane construction. (6mks)
