Rockgold Developers Builders Corporation

Sagana Rockville Subdivision
Brgy. Tay-ac, Rosario, La Union

As mandated by architect Kim, we are tasked to get the actual length and depth of creek at the
side of the project subdivision. We allotted morning for getting elevations of the creek. Before our
activity starts, we had a briefing with the foreman, manong peter for the said activity. We inspected the
site first, making tables and plotting the shape of the creek in the paper. With the assistance of Manong
peter and manong pong. We were able to determine the elevation of the creek by having the datum line
referenced to the level of the road to be built which is at 250cm from the NGL. We used steel bars to
stake the creek @ 1m, we also used rope as a guide, by marking it every 1m, to stake properly and
accurately. In order to determine the elevation we used a leveling hose. In the afternoon we started
determining the actual length of the creek. We were able to do so by offsetting 8m from the established
stakes of the road. From that offset length, we establish a point and staked a steel bar until we reached
the end of the creek. After establishing all points, we used a meter taped and had a taping activity. For
the rest of the day we had supervision and inspection activity. We supervised the removing of
formworks of the comfort room portion of the guard house and the backfilling at the side of the road.
There are a total of 8 workers in the site, 4 are working for the backfilling and 4 for the construction of
the guardhouse.

Since rainy season has already started, the site is experiencing flooding, this flooding runs through the
side of the road since it is not leveled yet with soil and is newly built, it caused damage to the side of the
road. The absence of the backhoe also burdens the workers, since they are compelled to do a hand to
hand back filling works. The backhoe is still in transit from baguio since it was also used in construction
of another project. The soil in the site is also hard to excavate since it is a rocky area and is not porous
that’s why water does not seep into the soil that much. Sometimes rain also occurs during lunch time
causing the work to stop. There is also a problem in terms of the delivery of the material. Manong peter
said that this time of the year supplies do not last long in hardware stores here in Rosario, especially
there are also other constructions around the area.

To solve the flooding problem, and prevent breakage to the roadside, workers are doing backfilling
works. Since the backhoe is not available, I suggest that one of the workers in the guardhouse will
transfer to the backfilling works since the guardhouse doesn’t require that much manpower yet and also
in order to speed up the backfilling works, while the rain is not yet strong. They are excavating soil from
the center area of the site to the road side; it is also good if they put the big rocks that they get from
digging, it will serve as a support to the loose soil being put in the side of the road. In terms of the
equipment, the firm should acquire enough materials like backhoe if they have found out that two
projects at the same would need a certain material, they should already come up with prepared solution,
and they should have reserved equipment on hand. For the delay of delivery of material, I can suggest to
have a reservation ahead of time in order to secure the materials. While the project starts, start listing
down the materials needed and secure the materials already from the hardware stores. Pin pointing
necessary items ahead of time gives allowance for adjustment for unexpected events, like price hike,
scarcity of materials and the like. Another thing, being updated about the weather also is good thing to
take into account, since we are informed about the weather, we can determine what part of the project
should be speed up in order to avoid delay.

Natural disasters are unavoidable; all we had to do is be prepared and have back up plans. In the
construction, we may encounter different problems. Some would not require any solution; all we can do
is to put up remedy. During this time we should be prepared, we should take into account all possible
alternative ways to continue the work and prevent damages. We must establish plans and consider
every little bit of information on ways how we could cope up. Having back up plans, secures time of
work, instead of being on hold because of the rain, we should think of other ways how can we use that
rain to our terms. We should think of ways that would give us the upper hand, ways that could make the
work easier. I realized that proper foreseeing every details beforehand is very important, it gives you
glimpse on what to expect and gives you time to think to formulate plans on how to deal with it, all we
need is a good plan, time management and right judgments. As future engineers, I realized that all the
burdens are your responsibility, it is better to have well set upped plans to have a good process of the
construction.
