Developing Technologies

Initial Task: Research recent technological developments and produce a webpage

about the changes in technology within the television and film industries which must
comprehensively explain developing technologies in the television and film industries
with elucidated examples and consistently using subject terminology correctly.

History

‘Movies have played a significant part in all our life since the last hundred years.
Originally starting out as a medium that depicted stories with the help of still
photography, movie technology history has come a long way and has provoked the
evolution of many innovations. Nowadays, movies from all around the world are
being made with the latest electronic and computer technologies and more and more
emphasis is given to merge the greatest innovations with technology to bring out the
best in movies.’

1895 was the year that saw the first movie released. Although it was shown in
theaters, it was black and white and had no sound. This was the silent era of films
when electric motors were put to use by the camera and projectors so that the movie
runs at a constant speed. ‘It was in the year 1917 on the 3rd of December that a movie
named the gulf between was released. This particular movie used Technicolor for the
first time and was responsible for bringing the innovation turf of color medium to the
movies.’

‘The Gulf Between”

‘It was during this time that electronics became a major part of movie making.
Innovations were carried on by moviemakers to use this electronic medium to
generate sound. The microphones were used to convert sound to an electrical signal
that could either be amplified or could be processed in some other ways electronically
and a photocell was installed that could allow the sound, in the form of photograph, to
change back into an electric signal. This was then used to create sound with the help
of loudspeakers and amplifying tubes. From this time onwards, amplifying tubes were
used abundantly for this process.’

Further analyzing the history of development in film technologies, via online sources
such as Wikipedia I’ve found out that ‘The history of film technology traces the
development of film technology from the initial development of "moving pictures" at
the end of 19th century to the present time. Motion pictures were initially exhibited as
a fairground novelty and developed into one of the most important tools
of communication and entertainment in the 20th century. Major developments in
motion picture technology have included the adoption of synchronized motion picture
sound, color motion picture film, and the adoption of digital film technologies to
replace physical film stock at both ends of the production chain by digital image
sensors and projectors.’

These are usually powered by macOS High Sierra or later.

CGI
‘The history of CGI goes back to the 1950’s, when mechanical computers were
repurposed to create patterns onto animation cels which were then incorporated into a
feature film. That first film which used CGI was Alfred Hitchcock’s VERTIGO
(1958).’
Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) is one of many tools that talented artists and
filmmakers use to help better tell their stories. CGI is not created by the push of some
magic button. It is the culmination of careful thought, design, experimentation and the
pure creativity of artists. The impossible becomes reality and when done well, evokes
wonder and awe as it transports the audience deeper into the story.

Digital Marketing

‘The Film industry is constantly on a look out of new and advanced marketing
techniques to promote a movie and target a mass audience. Today film promotions
have gone beyond releasing the teasers and trailers for the movie in the theaters. The
marketing team spends enormous efforts to formulate well-structured film marketing
strategies so that they can get the audience queuing up to buy the tickets. Digital
marketing in film industry is becoming an effective way to get the audience involved
and develop a strong personal relationship with them. Digital marketing scope
encompasses live streaming of music launches, Google hangout with the crew, social
media contests, movie based games, digital advertisements on YouTube and a lot
more. Several film-related smartphone applications also give their audiences a sneak
peek at the action behind the scenes during production, which can prove to be
educational and informative, it may also hype up the fans and audiences for the film
and enable them to bond online over social media platforms like Twitter and
Facebook, sharing the app and the features within it’.
