Assignment 2 (Subject: Ch.E.

202 Fluid Dynamics)

(Due Date: 10th February 2020)

Solve the following numerical Problems (CLO-1)

(Practice Problems related to General Energy Equation and variable Area flow)

Q1
Consider a steady state horizontal flow of fluid. The leak out of the system is 2 BTU/lbm of stream C.
Stream C is Freon 12 at 20 Pisa and 100 F. Stream B is also Freon 12 at 20 Pisa and 140 F. Stream A is
saturated liquid Freon 12 at 20 Pisa. If the stream C flows at 1lbm/s what are the flow rates of Stream A
and B? Given the enthalpy of stream A, B and C are 6.5, 98 and 92 BTU/lbm respectively.

Q2
Air flows steadily through a short section of constant are duct that is cooled by liquid nitrogen. The
properties at the inlet are T1 = 440 K, P1 = 188 kPa (abs) and velocity v1 = 210 m/s while the temperature
and pressure at the outlet of constant duct are T2 = 351 K and P2 = 213 kPa (abs). Calculate the area of the
duct, the enthalpy change, the change in internal energy and entropy change. Also state the assumptions
made while solving the problem?

Q3
A turbine expands 10 Ibm/sec of air from an inlet pressure and temperature of 40 Pisa and 500 F to an
outlet pressure of 14.9 Pisa. The turbine delivers 760 hp to an electric generator. The air velocity is 500
ft./sec at the turbine inlet and 100 ft./sec at the turbine outlet. The turbine casing is well insulated. The
flow through the turbine is steady. Calculate the static temperature at the turbine outlet, the stagnation
temperature and pressure at the turbine inlet and outlet, and the change of specific entropy between the
inlet and outlet. Is the expansion a reversible process?
Q4
Consider the isentropic flow of air in a channel. The following data is recorded at the inlet (Ma1 = 0.3,
T1 = 62 C, P1 = 650 kPa (abs.), area = 0.001 m2) and at outlet Ma2 = 0.8. Comment on the channel shape,
plot the TS diagram for the process, calculate the properties at the outlet and show that the results satisfy
the basic equations.
