Calculation of Nominal Thickness:- INPUT

OUTPUT
PIPE SIZE: 1118 mm(OD)
As per IS 5822: 1994 (2nd Revision), Clause-B 9.2

Nominal Thickness (mm), t = P.D

(2.a.f.e)+P
Max.Water Hammer pressure = 143.27 m
Static Head + Frictional Head = 75 m
Hence, Total design head = 218.27 m Say, 2.19 N/mm2

P = Internal design pressure in N/mm2 = 2.19 N/mm2

D = Outside Diameter in mm = 1118 mm

a = design factor = 0.7 (For pressure including surge pressure, as per sec. 10.35 of ‘Hydraulic Design
Handbook’, by Larry W. May, AWWA publication.)

f = specified minimum yield stress in N/mm2 = 235 N/mm2

(For Fe410, Spirally Welded Pipes, as per Table 4 of IS 3589:
2001, 3rd revision.

e = weld efficiency of the joint = 0.8 (For Arc or gas weld steel pipe in field welding, as per IS 5822:
1994, 2nd revision).

Therefore, Nominal thickness, t = 9.23 mm

Allowance for corrosion: -

As per IS 5822: 1994 (2nd revision), clause-B 10.1, a suitable corrosion allowance should be incorporated in calculating the
thickness of the steel plate to cater for the possibility of internal or external corrosion taking place. This corrosion allowance
should stand the required life of the pipeline.
Accordingly, corrosion allowance over the calculated Nominal Thickness of the steel pipe is considered as 1/16th inch
(i.e.1.59 mm). (As per recommendation made in chapter 5, page 79 of the textbook: ‘Water Supply and Waste Disposal’, by
W.A. Hardenbergh and E.B. Rodie.

Therefore, total thickness comes to: 10.82 mm

Allowance for Manufacturer’s Tolerance:-

In addition to corrosion allowance, an allowance for manufacturer’s tolerance is to be considered as per provisions
of IS 3589: 2001(3rd Revision), clause 12.3.2, which is 12.5%
Thus, considering Manufacturer’s Tolerance allowance as 12.5% over the calculated Nominal thickness of the
steel pipe, the required allowance comes to= 1.15 mm

Therefore, overall required wall thickness comes to: 11.97 mm UNSAFE

Required thickness for 1118 mm OD MS Pipe is= 12.0 mm
