Purlins
Definition
Purlins are structural components that run parallel to the eaves and support the roof membrane.
They can run on the girders or be hung between them.
Variants
Simple purlins
`These run on the girders or can be hung in. They can be installed vertically or perpendicularly
into the roof level.
Continuous purlins
These run on the girders and have much less deflection than simple beams.
Articulated purlins
Arranged skillfully, this system (also called cantilever purlins) makes it possible to utilize the
cross-section in an optimum way. The "joints" can be implemented using fasteners or dry splice joints
made of galvanized sheet metal with ring nails.
These continuous purlins are made of simple beams as individual components and run alternately
opposed to each other above the truss supports at beam width. The rigid joints are made by bolting,
nailing or dowelling the adjacent components in set overlapping lengths.
