First examination ( 10-AUG-2017 )

Time :01 hr 15min M. Marks: 15

Note: Attempt all question serially. Roll No.
* 0.5 mark questions should have concise answers.

Q1 .(a) Briefly explain and define all the static characteristics of measuring
instruments. (2)
(b) Differentiate between fundamental and derived units. (0.5)
(c) The dead zone in a certain pyrometer is 0.125% of its span. The calibration
is 400°C to 1000°C. What temperature change might occur before the change
is detected. (0.5)

Q2.(a) In an electrodynamic instrument the total resistance of the voltage coil

circuit is 8200 Ω and the mutual inductance changes uniformly from -173μH
at zero deflection to +175μH at full scale. The angle of full scale being 95°.
If a potential difference of 100V is applied across the voltage circuit and
a current of 3A at a power factor of 0.75 is passed through the current coil,
what will be the deflection? Spring constant of the instrument is 4.63×10-6N-
m/rad. (2)
(b) How can we extend the range of PMMC instruments. (1)

Q3. (a) State the difference and significance of Accuracy and Precision (1)
(b) Check dimensionally R2C=L is balanced. If not indicate the missing
dimension (0.5)
(c) Describe the elements of measuring instrument. (1.5)

Q4. (a) Derive for the torque equation of induction type instrument.
(2)
(b) How this torque varies with lagging flux, resistance of eddy path current
and time. (0.5)
(c) Explain the construction of electrostatic instruments? (0.5)

Q5. (a) The inductance of moving iron ammeter with full scale deflection of
90° at 1.5A is given by L= (200 + 40ϴ - ϴ2 - ϴ3) µH where ϴ is the
deflection in radian from the zero position. Estimate the angular deflection of
a pointer for a current of 1A. (2)

(b) State any four disadvantages of Moving Iron type instruments. (1)
