MICHAELIAN ICONS
Pater Familias & The Falcon and The Falconer

St Michael’s Institution has special regard for Brother Joseph

McNally as he was the person behind the two magnificent
metal sculptures - Paterfamilias and The Falcon and The
Falconer

ST. MICHAEL’S INSTITUTION, IPOH

Brother Joseph (1923 - 2002), was a highly regarded sculptor,
having created over 200 works (sculptures and paintings) in his
lifetime, using a diverse range of materials such as wood,
bronze, glass and metal.

Paterfamilias
Paterfamilias, Latin for parenthood, is located at the school
foyer. It was completed in 1980. It is a double figure, parent
and child, celebrating parenthood, which today includes the
role of teachers. Apart from the impressive concept, this
sculpture amazes us by the way Brother Joseph projects, in
welded steel, a sense of warm trusting relationship that bound
child to parent. Paterfamilias has long become a focal point
of inspiration for the Michaelian Spirit.

The Falcon and The Falconer was created by Brother

Joseph in 1973 using discarded and unusable car bumpers and
unwanted metal. The sculpture shows the strong bonding
between the falcon and the falconer. Inspired by the poem by
William Butler Yeats, “The Second Coming”, the sculpture
signifies the teacher, reaching out to the pupil who is ahead
of his time, by constantly striving to keep in touch with him.

His creations continue to inspire new generations of fellow

Lasallians, particularly Michaelians around the world.

As Michaelians, we are strong when we are united and true.
United means we do not stand alone, we stand together. We
learn to do within our class, where we make sure no one is
left out or left behind. To have strong class spirit, we make sure
everyone is part of the group. In this way we are not only
UNITED but also TRUE, true to our ourselves and true to each
other.

It has been another fruitful and very meaningful year for St. Michael’s Institution as it welcomed the 102 nd
year with the theme, “Onward Michaelians, United and True”. As Michaelians, we are much stronger when we
are united and true. The theme inspires all Michaelians to stand together and to make sure no one is left
behind. We make sure everyone is part of the group. With this, we are not only united but also true, true to
ourselves and true to each other.
St. Michael’s Institution stands sturdy with all its might even after a century in service to educate the young
generations. St. Michael’s Institution has been renowned for its curricular and co-curricular achievements. It
is without a doubt that St. Michael’s Institution had a glorious past and we are proud to say that we have a
glorious present as well. St. Michael’s Institution had definitely undergone numerous changes. Throughout the
decades, St. Michael’s Institution’s greatest asset is its versatility at adapting to
new developments and it is this power and skill that will be with us as we surf
the future. We are given an opportunity to look back and be proud of our Alma
Mater’s achievements over a century. St. Michael’s Institution is absolutely
something because this is the place where prominent and distinguished legends
were born. St. Michael’s Institution never fails to amaze people up to this day.
As for me, I consider St. Michael’s Institution as the eighth wonder of the world
because it is this institution that has taught me to learn and cultivate the Lasallian
culture. As Lasallians, we are taught to live the Lasallian values of Faith, Service
and Community. Being here in St. Michael’s has beyond doubt taught me well on
important life lessons. This school has become a significant chapter of my
life and I have always believed that it is right to allow the experience I
gain from this institution to shape me into a better person. St. Michael’s
Institution will always be a place for education and outstanding character
building.
The Michaelian 2014 is the 66th edition of its yearly magazine and was
first published in 1948 under the directorship of Brother Patrick O’Donovan
and it is truly a great honour for me to be the Editor-In-Chief for 2014 and
working with the Editorial Team is really an unforgettable experience. This
magazine certainly will not be successful if it is not because of a team of 24
talented Editorial Team members. To the Editorial Team; whose names are too
many to be mentioned, thank you for all your hard work. I owe a debt to my
fellow editors. I would like to thank my Editor-In-Associate, Tan Wei Shern and
the former Editor-In-Chief, Christina See-Kei Wong for their unfailing support and
guidance throughout the course of this production. I would like to express my
deepest gratitude to the panel of teacher advisors for their time spent in
completing this yearbook. This magazine production would be impossible without
the consistent support from the people that I had mentioned above.
Special thanks to Mr. Peter Khiew for the outstanding cover design.
Lastly, The Editorial Board of 2014 proudly presents to you our annual school
production, ‘THE MICHAELIAN’ featuring the theme ‘Onward Michaelians, United and
True’. Cheers!

negara, sekaligus mewujudkan sistem pendidikan bertaraf dunia.

majalah sekolah atas segala inisiatif, komitmen, kesungguhan sehingga berjaya menerbitkan
majalah sekolah.
mencabar. Bagi pihak Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia, segala usaha murni penerbitan majalah
ini amatlah dihargai.

Secara langsung PPPM 2013-2025 mula merentasi tahun kedua. Bagi mencapai hasrat
menjayakan transformasi pendidikan Malaysia, semua pihak berkepentingan perlu merealisasikan

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh dan Salam
Sejahtera.

penerbitan Majalah THE MICHAELIAN SMK St. Michael, Ipoh.

pembangunan pendidikan negara terlaksana.

atas kejayaan menerbitkan majalah tahunan SMK St. Michael, Ipoh.

terima kasih kepada Sidang Redaksi Majalah THE MICHAELIAN 2014

Sekian, terima kasih. Wassalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Dear Michaelians and the whole community of SMI,

Greetings of Peace!

Warm fraternal greetings on the 66th anniversary of your school

magazine, the Michaelean, which has been a faithful chronicle of the
long and glorious history of your institution.

As you bravely go beyond the century mark, I cannot help but wonder at God’s goodness. I think it
is only fitting that we give thanks to the God who creates, redeems, and sanctifies us, and as a
clear mark of this: Over the years, He has been with you, sustaining the good work He has begun
in you.

There are three recent events in your Institution where in I discern the strong presence of the
Holy Spirit:

First, the countless old boys who have graduated from your halls are a testament to the wonderful
work of education you are engaged in. Their recent donation of RM15,000.00 for seventy-five
deserving students is a sign that you have taught your students not only to be smart but also to
be caring.

Second, your recent theater production, Beauty and the Beast, last April, showcased your artistic
side, Beauty and the Beast, teaches us to look beyond initial appearances and not to judge things
as we see them.

Lastly, Pravielana s/o Patmansritha, a boy from Form 2 returned a wallet he had found while walking
along the halls of the school. This simple act of kindness, this choice to be honest, I feel is a
paragon of the Michaelean Spirit.

I have just returned from the General Chapter of the Brothers in Rome wherein we elected our
new Superiors and charted new directions for the Lasallian world for the next seven years. The
theme of the Chapter was: “This work of God is also your work.” Dear Michaleans, God has been
at work in you for the many years he has sustained you. Always remember also to continue to
honor his work and presence in you by being true Michaeleans and by being faithful disciples of
St. John Baptist De La Salle.

Fraternally Yours in St. La Salle,

Dear Michaelians,

Each year it is an honour for the La Salle Brothers on behalf of

the Lasallian Family in Malaysia to affirm our commitment to the
administrators, staff and students of our Schools for the services
that you are offering to the Young and to one another. We remind
ourselves as you tell your stories in your School Magazine that
we also have a dream: We are Lasallians: Together in Association. You have also decided to
adopt the theme: Onward Michaelians United and True for the year 2014.

This indeed is very appropriate as know that our moving forward also involves our looking
back at our honoured history as educators and the educative community in Malaysia, made
up of Brothers, administrators, teachers, parents, alumni, collaborators and benefactors. We
know that we have surely made a difference, in and through our unique Lasallian experience
of Association in Unity to our students and all Malaysians because we are True to our Beliefs.
There is no doubt that a Faith-Driven education that gives importance to the Dignity of each
Person and Nurturing a deep Respect for Others has been the firm foundation of our common
commitment to a Life-long Service to Humanity. It was this unseen and hidden Lasallian Ethos,
embedded in our structures, our policies and most importantly the mentors in our schools. They
have inevitably stirred the Young to continue to nurture what they receive and upon leaving
school to share their lives, as gifts in the service to the nation as professionals, citizens and
parents. They are too many to name but you know them “by Heart”. We are proud of Being
Lasallians and we are grateful to God for this blessing and to each of you for your
contributions. The School is the place to grow and blossom and the time to become the person
you really want to become as part of your dream. You become special when you came to St.
Michael’s and we want to make you really special for the rest of your life.

May your years at St. Michael’s be a time to become A True Michaelians: one in Unity and
One in Truth. Thank you for being the bricks that will build bridges and make us the one unique
Lasallian Family in Malaysia for Others.

Yours in Service,

St. Michael’s is spiritual home to myriads of both past and present
Michaelians, thanks to a warm sense of family which all share
from their school days and carry through life.

It is not just the uniquely splendid architecture and homely

grounds, now greatly enhanced thanks to the centennial
countdown, master-minded by the combined efforts of Board, OMA
and PIBG.

Even from its humble beginnings in 1912, it was rather the emphasis on the bonding values
of our world-wide Lasallian tradition. These made us special.

They are ever more relevant today because we live in a world that is experiencing so much
fragmentation at levels of family, nation and the world at large.

Our Lasallian heritage stresses the importance of strong spiritual values and convictions based
on our particular tradition. They also demand that we be people for others, seeking ways to
transcend self and reach out to those in need. Finally they promote a strong sense of
community.

“Onward Michaelians united and true”, this year’s motto, draws our attention to this importance
of building community in our very classrooms where the future of our Malaysian society is
already being shaped.

Let us one and all commit ourselves to ensuring the future of this truly Michaelian heritage.

The Michaelian Editorial Board has chosen “Onward Michaelians -
United and True” as the theme for this year’s school magazine and I
congratulate them for this timely and apt choice of subject for us to
focus on. The world we live in at this point in time is under severe
stress and strain in some countries such as Burma, Thailand, Iraq,
Palestine, Afghanistan, Sudan, Nigeria, Turkey, and Pakistan where
religious, ethnic and political differences are not infrequently
translated into acts of violence and loss of lives. Even on the football
fields of advanced countries of Europe, racism is raising its ugly head so much so that frequent
“SAY NO TO RACISM!” advertisements are seen on TV nowadays. At home this kind of tension is
rising to uncomfortable levels, unfortunately.

We need to ask ourselves - where is the quality of life when there is a serious lack of unity in the
country? When people live in fear, apprehension and worrisome uncertainty? Our quality of life
depends very much on our ability to live in peace and harmony with people around us, to embrace
diversity, while taking affirmative action to nurture unity. In the extreme, the very survival of our
nation depends on the ability of the Malays, Chinese and Indians to remain united and true
Malaysians.

People will find it difficult to be united without being true to one another. The concept of truth
brings in values of sincerity and authenticity. These are essential elements in the building blocks
of any organization, be it government, public institutions, commercial organizations, or the family
unit. Surely we will all do better when we know that our colleagues will not let us down, and
can be depended upon to fulfill their responsibilities, to mean what they say and say what they
mean. Pretence and covering up of mistakes will lead to further failures. Truth must be allowed
to prevail, at all times.

I am happy to note that it has been a special feature of St. Michael’s that all races get on well
with each other as a well-integrated community. To prevent cracks from setting in, this tradition
needs to be constantly nurtured, at every opportunity that we are in contact with our students.
Let us create an environment in our school where young minds consistently get to experience values
of love, care and respect for each other regardless of race or religion.

It is my hope that we will all remember the theme “Onward Michaelians - United and True” and
mindfully look for opportunities to live out these values, to seize them as mentoring moments for
each other to help build a truly united 1-Malaysia society, starting in our classrooms and playing fields.

2014 has been a momentous year for your PTA. Because of the
contribution from your parents we were able to assist the school
administrators in uplifting your schooling experience. Your parents
contribution is appreciated and the cooperation of the school
administrators is valued. I and my committee members thank you all.

In 2014 your PTA carried out our normal duties with ease as
contributions from parents were encouraging. We budgeted for RM30,000 to help needy
students. This amount appears large but when broken down we were only able to help ten
students from each Form. I hope that your PTA, through your support will be able to continue
this worthwhile project. I am proud to have been able to represent you all to channel your
contributions towards this cause and thank you for your support. We also undertook the
improvement to our staff dining room and toilets. This work may not directly benefit our children
but I believe that the payback can be measured empirically. When our teachers are comfortable
they are happy and a happy teacher will bring out the best in our children.

In 2013 your PTA and the Board of Governors decided to plan for a concert hall and car park.
Through the help of our Second Finance Minister, Dato Seri Husni, who is a Michaelian, we
were allocated two hundred thousand ringgit by the Government towards this project. We still
have a long way to go before we can raise enough funds to complete this project but
meanwhile, in December 2014, we have started the initial work of clearing the ground first.
Your PTA will support the BoG to materialise this project.

We must all believe in a common vision before we can be truly united. I suggest that
Michaelians unite by sharing a common good. As a start, let us look at our founder, St. John
De La Salle and his desire to care for the Last, Lost and the Least and begin from here. Let
us embrace this gentleness and kindness towards our fellow Michaelians. Let us be identified
by our honesty and politeness. When you step out from school as a group, let others identfy
you as Michaelians; not because of your school badge but because of your sportsmanship and
fairplay.

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to be of service to this great Institution. I wish you
all success in your strive for Unity and Truth.

Yours sincerely,

On behalf of the Old Michaelians Association, my warmest greetings
to all present Michaelians and your families.

I am proud to mention that St Michael’s Institution Ipoh, which started

in 1912, has journeyed through all these years and gained the trust
and appreciation of thousands of students and their parents alike.
This can be reflected through the many successes and accolades
achieved by Michaelians in studies and co-curricular activities, which
I am proud of greatly.

St Michael’s Ipoh, being a school of the La Sallian family, has always looked into the needs of the
individual child. As being guided by the school theme this year, “Onward Michaelians United and
True”, we try to understand and work with each child, and we firmly believe that it is our
responsibility to enable the child in our care to develop as a whole.

The long-awaited amalgamation of SMI Primary 1 and Primary 2 was successfully implemented, with
the primary school now named as SK St Michael, Ipoh. It was a long process, actively pursued by
the Board of Governors and the OMA, masterminded by PTA chairman Joseph Michael Lee.

We continue to maintain close links with the school. As usual we sponsored this year’s stage
production, “Beauty and The Beast” which played to capacity audiences and was voted a resounding
success.

Right now two projects are being planned. One is the contruction of a sub-station within the school
compound costing RM230, 000. It involves a tunnel under the road from the Ipoh Library. This has
become quite urgent to provide a more dependable power supply to meet ever expanding needs.
The other is building a roof over the basketball courts, a long cherished dream with countless
possible uses.

Lastly, I congratulate the Principal and the Editorial Board members for having succesfully produced
this year’s edition of “The Michaelian”. This is not just a means for a school to communicate its
thought but it also highlights the success and achievement of its pursuits.

Thank you.

Pelaksanaan Pelan Pembangunan Pendidikan Malaysia 2013-2015 (PPPM) bermakna bahawa kita semua mesti
bersedia dengan segala pembaharuan, penambahbaikan dan perubahan. Sambil kita memanfaatkan
kita hendaklah sentiasa dialu-alukan.

HEAD PREFECT
........................................................................................................................................................................................
HO JOO HIN
........................................................................................................................................................................................

G
reetings and salutations to all Michaelians of young and old,
teachers, parents and friends who have had the glorious opportunity
to witness yet another successful and splendid year in St. Michael’s
Institution put together in The Michaelian 2014.
Being a Michaelian for 13 years, never in my wildest dreams have I expected to
lead the students at the pinnacle as the Head Prefect. This is a perfect example
that everyone can be anyone they intend to, if they put their heart and soul
into it. However, Michaelians have a secret weapon that most schools do not.
That weapon is our Michaelian Spirit. I still remember clearly whenever we
participated in inter-school competitions, we will always stand out. People always
find us the noisiest, the funniest, the friendliest and the most charismatic ones.
You name it, we have got it.
Many do not know that our school is part of a greater network of institutions
known as the La Sallian schools which span across the globe. The La Sallian
values have been the pillars of foundation in this majestic school and until
today, these values continue to inspire and encourage many Michaelians even
after they leave St. Michael’s. The core values of faith, zeal and community are
deeply upheld by every single members of the Michaelian fraternity, from the
students to the teachers and even the school personnel.
I still remember the good old days when we still had the old canteen with the
long aluminium tables and benches and also the former primary school which
was connected to the secondary school. Back in those days, both schools used
to share the same canteen. The reason why I am sharing this wonderful memory
is because I realized how fast things can change. In a blink of an eye, the new
primary block was build, the canteen was renovated and many other changes in
our infrastructure were carried out.
Thus, I would like to encourage all Michaelians to cherish the moments that
you have with your batch mates. Before you know it, all of you would have gone
separate ways to pursue your own dreams and aspirations. Like the old tortoise
in Kung Fu Panda said, the past is history, the future is a mystery but the present
is a gift so do not waste it.
I encourage all Michaelians to invest extra effort into whatever they do, especially
in their studies because at the end of the day, you have nothing to lose. Most
importantly, no matter where you go, do not ever forget your Michaelian roots.
Always bear in mind that you are a Michaelian and be proud of it. We are the
best, we always have and always will be. I wish to thank God, my family and
every single teacher from my first day of school till my very last for helping to
shape me into the man I am today. Last but not least, thank you St. Michael’s
Institution.
ONWARD MICHAELIANS! UNITED AND TRUE.
QUIS UT DEUS
Sincerely,

LADYHEAD PREFECT

HILDA PAVITER KAUR A/P SOBA SINGH
........................................................................................................................................................................................

It
is indeed an honour and a privilege to have been given a chance to
deliver this speech. Standng here as a Lady Head of St. Michael Ipoh
has indeed been a great blessing in my life and I thank God for this
opportunity.

Looking back, I truly believe that the time we spend in school has moulded
and made who we are today. A school is where one can grow, not only to
excel in education but to mature in character as well. To make mistakes and
to learn from them. We as students often grumble about how hard it is being
student; having to wake up so early in the morning, the homework, the extra
curricular activities, the restrictions, but I believe that none of us would ever
trade the memories we shared in our schooling life for anything else. St Michael
Ipoh has been more than just a school to so many of us. It has become our
second home. Providing security and acceptance to every student who walks
through its gates. And being here, I have personally witnessed the love that
bonds every student to this school. It is more than just the green ties we wear
to school everyday. It is knowing that no matter where you venture to in this
world, you are part of this big Michaelian family. Once a Michaelian, Forever
a Michaelian.

I had a memorable year here as a student and a lady head. With the months
passing by so fast, I know that St. Michael’s has given me so much more than
I have expected since my first day here. So I would like to take this opportunity
to express my sincere gratitude to all the teachers and students who has made
my time here in St Michaels such an unforgettable experience. And to all the
fellow Michaelians, keep the Michaelian spirit in you alive and continue to make
your alma mater proud.

“What makes life valuable is that it doesn't last forever, what makes it precious
is that it ends. I know that now more than ever. And I say it today of all days
to remind us that time is luck. So don't waste it living someone else's life, make
yours count for something. Fight for what matters to you, no matter what.
Because even if you fall short, what better way is there to live?"

QUIS UT DEUS, Thank you.

Having the ‘Michaelian of the Year’ award and the Nicet-Joseph medal bestowed upon me
for two consecutive years is certainly the greatest privilege I have obtained thus far in my
life. In the year 2010, I stepped foot into this presitigious institution with the zeal to prevail
in my studies and also to strive my hardestto excel in whatever I do that upholds the good
name of the alma mater. 2014 marks my final year in this historical school and it finally
dawns upon me what a big piece of my life I’m leaving behind. I think those precious years
in this school simply fleeted by happily on the sands of time and it’s currently ushering us
out of its perimeter to venture into a new dimension. As a proud student of this alma mater,
I have strongly inculcated the essential values and commandmentsof life that I practice
unfailingly in facing the horizons and challenges thrown in my path.
First and foremost, I would love to seize this opportunity to express my wholehearted
gratitude towards all the incredible opportunities exposed to me by the school for all these
years. My very special thanks and indelible love goes out tothe wonderful members of the
Michaelian community comprising ofmy beloved principal, Madam Loh Wei Seng, altruistic
teachers, friends and of course my parents for entrusting me with theirsheer exhortation and
moral support towards achieving great success in life which fundamentallymolded me into
who I am today. Striking a balance between academics and sports is definitely the greatest challenge a student athlete would uphold
and I strongly believe the reason why I prevailed in becoming an all rounder is merely the fruitful outcome of the indescribable
amount of hardwork, sacrifice and dedication I have put into achieving excellence in both fields. My avenue in sports began from
scratch from merely representing theschool to representing the district, and then the stateand eventually the country. Representing
the nation in sports was a dream that I always held on to ever since a tender age, inspired by our national heroes namely Dato’
Lee Chong Wei and Dato’ Nicol Ann David. Among my significant list of international achievements, emerging as a the gold medalist
in the boys shot putt at the 9th South East Asian Youth Athletics Championships in Myanmar earlier this year would be the most
eminent one. I was also qualified to compete in the Youth Olympic Games held in Nanjing, China, the meet that I anticipated most,
but I eventually held back and decided not to compete as I had to concentrate on my studies. Through sports, I have learnt most
imperatively that I will only succeed if I concentrate on delivering the best I could in every competition instead of having the setback
mentality of merely vanquishing my foes in the field of battle.
“The hardest arithmetic to master in life is that which enables us to count our blessings” is a popular phrase. Contrary to this, I
would like to express my deepest appreciation towards each and everyone who were the building blocks of my success. Firstly, to
my ever dedicated and loving teachers who were willing to help me out altruistically all the wayin my studies. These extraordinary
educators prevailed in extracting the nectar of goodness at all times from young aspirants like us. Furthermore, the striking green
coat presented to me by the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) withit’s very own
significance of recognizing international achievers in our alma mater will always
remain ingrained in my thoughts and I’m really thankful for that.
After five remarkable years in this second home of mine, words are simply
exiguous to elucidate the fond and evergreen memories that were greatly
imparted upon me in this alma mater. Wherever I go, I will always carry the
utmost pride of being a Michaelian. I am truly blessed to have come across these
heroic people of the Michaelian community who have enriched my life as they
resolutely stood by me through thick and thin throughout my years in this
institution. Before signing off, allow me to share this impactful quote with all of
you, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising up every time we fall”.
Wishing all Michaelians a splendid
success in your future undertakings!
Onward Michaelians, United and True.
Thank you.

Annual Report
form the THE BOARD
of GOVERNORS
...................................................................................................................................................................................................................

T he Board of Governors of St. Michael’s Institution Ipoh is fortunate to have

committed and highly professional team of members who give a tremendous
amount of their time voluntarily to the progress and development of the School.

They bring their experience, life skills and common sense to the task. They aim to raise
the standards and expectations of what can be achieved by the school and strengthen
the involvement of parents and the community.

Being guardian of the school culture and tradition, the governors have always worked
hard in maintaining the ethos of the school which promotes the moral, spiritual,
intellectual, social and personal development of all her pupils.

St. Michael’s, as a school belonging to the bigger La Sallian family, has always treasured
the Lasallian heritage to harness individual potential, both in the dimension of moral,
academic and curricular performance. Towards this, the important strategic role to play
is to help the principal and staff provide the best possible education for all the pupils.

Some notable achievements worthy of mention are the installation of 13 units of new
air-conditioners in the school main hall and the realization of a TNB substation to
complement the increasing usage of electricity in school. An upcoming project initiated
is to build a cover over the basketball court.

The Board will continue to look into the needs of “the last, the lost and the least”.
Towards this, we look forward to all stakeholders to work with us to offer our students
a sense of purpose in their value formation and character development.

For the many distinguished achievements among our students in both curriculum and
co-curricular, the Board congratulates the principal Madam Loh Wei Seng and teachers
for their dedication and commitment throughout the year, in ensuring the best for our
fellow Michaelians.

Looking forward to another year of partnership with the school, the La Salle Brothers,
the Old Michaelians Association (OMA) and the PTA.

Report on the
OLD MICHAELIANS
ASSOCIATION
...................................................................................................................................................................................................................

T
he Old Michaelian Association Ipoh will continue to promote communication and
collaboration between the old boys and the association. This is evident in the
many dinners and functions which we have organized throughout the year. The
81 stannual dinner we held at the Red Crescent Hall this year was a tremendous
success. We saw a gathering of happy old boys, members of the Lasallian alumni
nationwide and well-wishers from many corners of the world - a task we enjoy doing.

The OMA also reaches out to the under priviledged, particularly students who are in
need of financial assistance to acquire shoes or uniforms. This is our way to give back
to the alma mater. We also make annual visits to Asrama Bintang, a home for aged
women customarily to fellowship, host dinners and distribute financial aid.

We continue to establish close links with the school. As usual the OMA sponsored this
year’s stage production, “Beauty and The Beast”. This effort is important to assist the
school in strengthening the tradition of performing arts. We wish to thank the Principal,
teachers, the director Miss Corrinne Mah, the crew and the cast for a brilliant and
superb performance.

OMA has cordial and healthy working relationships with the BOG headed by Tan Sri
Lee Oi Hian, PTA under the leadership of Mr Joseph Michael Lee and SMI Principal
Madam Loh Wei Seng. We also maintain a good relationship with the Brothers and other
Lasallian Associations

We thank our members for their continued support throughout the year and we look
forward to continuing our success into 2015 and beyond.

St. Michael’s Institution on the 3rd of January 2014 bid farewell to a long serving teacher, Pn.
Hjh. Nurazizan bt. Hj. Mohamed Razalli. She was born on the 4 th June 1954, a Friday. She is the
eldest child to her four other siblings. She had received the Excellent Service Award three times
which were in 1995, 2003 and 2009 respectively for her outstanding work as an educator.
She received her primary education in SK Manong, Kuala Kangsar, secondary education in SM
Raja Perempuan Kalsom, Kuala Kangsar and at Main Convent, Ipoh. She then pursued her tertiary education in Politeknik Ungku Omar,
Ipoh and also at Maktab Perguruan Teknik in Cheras.
She had served in SMK Putra Perlis from 1979 to 1981 and later was transferred to St. Michael’s Institution in 1982 until her
retirement. Throughout her years of service, she served as the Form Three Moderator as well as a Kemahiran Hidup teacher. She is
a likable person among her colleagues and students alike and is steadfast to her life’s philosophy that one should be sincere and
honest in order to achieve success and satisfaction in whatever work that is being done.
Her colleagues had many things to say about her. Mdm. Bhajan Kaur described Pn. Hjh. Nurazizana s a dedicated and consenctious
teacher who has worked tirelessly in St. Michael’s Institution for more than three decades. She has left an indelible mark and her
presence would be missed. Ustaz Suhaimi Hamid added on by describing Pn. Hjh. Nurazizan to have a motherly figure in dealing with
her students. Mr. Chong also said that he was extremely grateful for her contributions towards the discipline of the Form Three
students. As said by Pn. Hjh. Zaliha bt. Ismail, Pn. Hjh. Nurazizan was a trusted friend and would always give helpful advice to the
newly posted or young teachers and she is person of a few words but has an approachable personality. En. Ibrahim Ahmed reminisces
that she, also fondly known as Kak Zan, is not a person who denies the opportunity to assist in words of advice or in other way she
can. Mdm. Thevanei Amaippen says that she had known Pn. Hjh. Nurazizan for 20 years. Pn. Hjh. Nurazizan has a commendable
personality whereby she is not a self-centred person and would do what is best for the school. She is hardly absent from school and
that she does her job as a Moderator very efficiently.
We, the students and teachers of St. Michael’s Institution would like to bid farewell to you. Your presence and contributions would
be dearly missed. Thank you teacher and happy retirement with the best of luck and
health for the years to come.
Coincidently on the 3rd of January 2014, Pn. Nor Azlina Mohd. Lop decided to call it
a day for her teaching career. Her retirement ceremony coincided with Pn. Hjh.
Nurazizan’s retirement ceremony on the same day. She arrived at St. Michael’s
Institution in 2012 with a B.Sc in Chemistry (Hons) and taught Chemistry to the
Form Four and Form Five students. With that, we would also like to take this
opportunity to wish you a Happy Retirement and all the best in your journey in life.
After all, your advice to us at St. Michael’s was, “Life is short, make it sweet”.
