TAREA #9: MOTORES ELECTRICOS
1. List six items that must be specified for electric motors
Foot mounting holes
Cast iron frame
Stator windings
High temperature insulation systems
Die cast aluminum rotor
Fan cover.

2. List eight factors to be considered in the section of an electric motor

Operating voltage and frequency

Frame size
Mounting details
Environmental factors
Current limitations
Operational Torque
Type of motor
Type of work cycle

3. Define synchronousspeed for an AC motor

The synchronous speed is the speed of the revolution of the magnetic field in the stator
winding of the motor. It is the speed at which the electromotive force is produced by the
alternating machine.
4. Describe and sketch the form of a three-phase AC power

It is used in industrial facilities and large stores.

It consists of three conductors; each one forms a different wave but with the same frequency and
amplitude.
Each phase is displaced 120º from the next.
5. Figure 1 shows a machine that is to be driven by a 5-hp, protected, foot-
mounted AC motor having a 184T frame. The motor is to be aligned with the
shaft of the driven machine. Make a complete dimensioned drawing, showing
standard side and top view of the machine and the motor. Design a suitable
mounting base for the motor showing the motor mounting holes.

6. Refer to the AC motor performance curve in Figure 2.

Figure 2: Problem 6

a) What type of motor is the curve likely to represent?

A single phase, split-phase AC motor.
b) If the motor is a six-pole type, rated at 0.75 hp, how much torque can it exert at the
rated load?

We used this table and determine full load speed of motor of 6 poles (n).
63000P
T=
n
63000(0.75)
T=
1140
T = 41.45lb − in
c) How much torque can the motor develop to start a load?
Start a load = 150%xT
Start a load = 1.50x41.45
𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 = 𝟔𝟐. 𝟏𝟖 𝐥𝐛 − 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞
d) What is the breakdown torque of the motor?
Breakdown = 350%xT
Breakdown = 3.50x41.45
𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 = 𝟏𝟒𝟓. 𝟎𝟖 𝐥𝐛 − 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞
