2.5 Stickleback Evolution Virtual Lab

Lesson Objective:Today I will be able to: Analyze the pelvic structures of
stickleback fish collected from two lakes to determine which population (Bear Paw or
Frog Lake) has experienced a loss of pelvic structure and make a prediction about why
this happened.

Criteria for Success

❏ Determine if pelvic structure is Complete, Reduced, or Absent
❏ Determine which population has lost pelvic structure over time
❏ Identify 3 pieces of relevant/appropriate evidence to support my claim and help explain why this happened

Do Now
1. In my own words, phenotypeis…
____________________________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________

2. Having a pelvic structure is dominantover not having a pelvic structure. Which of the following best describes
this dominant trait in stickleback fish?
a. A homozygous recessive (pp) stickleback fishwill have a pelvic structure
b. A heterozygous (Pp)stickleback fish will not have a pelvic structure
c. A homozygous dominant (PP) stickleback fish will have a pelvic structure
d. A homozygous dominant (PP) and heterozygous(Pp)stickleback fish will both show a pelvic
structure.

3. Based on your knowledge, what do you think is an advantage of having a pelvic structure? What is a disadvantage
of having a pelvic structure?

LEADER Discussion Questions: (Make sure to discuss as a group, encourage ALL members to participate)
a. How do you determine whether a pelvic structure is Complete, Reduced or Absent?
b. How do you think the pelvic structure helps the stickleback fish survive?
c. What would need to happen for the pelvic structure phenotype to disappear?

LEADER Discussion Questions: (Make sure to discuss as a group, encourage ALL members to participate)
a. Looking at your data, which pelvic structures phenotype (Complete, Absent, Reduced) of stickleback
fish were most prominent in Bear Paw Lake?

b. Looking at your data, which pelvic structures phenotype (Complete, Absent, Reduced) of stickleback
fish were most prominent in Frog Lake?

c. In terms of pelvic structure phenotypes (Complete, Reduced, Absent), whyare the Bear Paw Lake
stickleback fish and the Frog Lake stickleback fish different from one another? What environmental
factors can you predictmight be responsible for these differences? Come up with at least 3 possible
environmental factors.
