ABSTRACT

Shear strength is one of the properties of the soil that plays an important

role on measuring the capacity of the soil, its resistance to failure. Increase in

shear strength will help the soil to withstand possible failures the reason why

reinforcements were being applied on the soils to increase its tension capability

since soil is known to be weak in tension. Thus, reinforcement is recommended

for this kind of purposes.

This study aims to assess the shear strength of Rizal soil reinforces with

fine mesh. This study will focus on the Antipolo clay soil, the most common soil

type in Rizal. Test will be done in soils with and without fine mesh and will

undergo unconfined compression testing to analyze the changes of the shear

strength of the soil with and without fine mesh. It will show in the result whether

there is an improvement on the shear strength of the soils and the effectiveness

of fine mesh as soil reinforcement.
