The design program is to design a 3 star hotel building at Pondicherry with innovative
concept. Pondicherry has the potential to become one of the important tourist destinations in
India with the growing demand. The design should be very creative with focus on functional
and sustainability aspects. There are no limits in the way of imagination of design but every
creative idea of design should be practical. The emphasis should be on creation of unique
environment reflecting culture of the place.
OBJECTIVE:
1. Design of building in response to the site, its characteristics and the context.
2. Designing a building by stacking of different functions vertically and addressing
various concerns such as coordinating various building services, vertical circulation,
basement parking and structural grid with introduction to disaster management design
strategies /techniques and universal design.
COURSE OUTLINE:-
2. Strength and weaknesses of horizontal vis a vis vertical spatial arrangements in buildings.
3. Coordination of various building services such as water supply, lifts, drainage, garbage
disposal, lighting,air conditioning etc.
STEP -1 - Student need to do data collection, Literature study and live case study of 3 star
hotels. The design program should be formulated as per inferences of case studies.
STEP -2 - Site visit, site analysis with respect to location, surroundings, topography and
climate, visual analysis etc. Bylaws for setbacks, parking, toilet requirements and fire
services etc.
STEP -3 - Zoning and circulation diagram at site level with their concept of development and
3D Model (Any material) for form exploration.
STEP -4 - Single line plans of all activities, schematic structural grids, sections and block
model.
STEP -5 –Design and development of important activity areas with anthropometry, interior
space requirements and kind of environment required. Development of double line plans.
STEP -6 –Sections & elevations of Building considering massing, elevational treatment etc.
STEP -7 –Development of site plan with parking, road, pedestrian connectivity and detailing
of open spaces etc.
STEP -8 – Views and final model to explain the overall design etc.
ABOUT SITE:-
The site is located near Serenity beach and Rivera resort of Pondicherry, access along East
coast road. Site has 18 M wide main road and 9 M roads on other two sides. The area of site
is 8090 Sq.M.
