History of Coorg
The northern part of Coorg district was under the reign of Kadambas between the 2nd and 6th
century. However, after a war between the Kadambas and the Gangas in the 11th century, the
Cholas were the sole rulers of this province. After the 12th century, the Hoysalas, who were
ruling Hassan district, defeated the Cholas and in the 14th century, the Vijayanagara kings took
over and ruled the province.
After their downfall, the local Nayaks took over different parts of Coorg. The war between
different rulers of the province and the Haleri kings made the latter the new rulers of Coorg from
the year 1600 to 1834, and after their reign ended, the region of Coorg was under colonial rule.
Coorg was declared as an independent state in the year 1950 by the Indian Constitution and
when many Indian states were reorganised in the year 1956, Coorg was merged with the state
of Karnataka and declared a district. Coorg has three taluks which include Madikeri,
Somavarapete and Veerajapete.
Things to do in Coorg
Popular places in Coorg include Kakkabe, which is also the largest producer of honey in south
Asia. One of the main religious sites here is the ancient Omkareshwara Temple. Nagarhole
National Park is another popular tourist attraction that is home to a variety of wildlife such as
elephants and panthers.
With its economy dependent on agriculture, plantations and forestry, Coorg is considered to be
one of the most prosperous districts in Karnataka. Known as the ‘Coffee Bowl of India’, Coorg
contributes 30% to the total coffee production in India.
Besides coffee and pepper, cardamom and oranges are the other mainstays of Coorg’s
economy. Set amidst verdant valleys, misty hills and acres of coffee plantations, Coorg is a
perfect getaway for travellers.
Coorg is also a paradise for adventure junkies. Its hills are a perfect for adventure activities like
trekking, rock climbing, biking and white water rafting.

Travelling to Coorg
Coorg does not have a railway station but is well connected to Mysore (120 km) and Mangalore
(135 km), the nearest cities to the destination. Tourists can take a flight to Mangalore, the
nearest airport to reach Coorg, and then head to Madikeri by bus or taxi. Mysore is the nearest
railhead and is just a two-and-a-half-hour drive away from Coorg.
The best time to visit Coorg is from September to March as the destination enjoys a pleasant
climate during this season.
Finally the day came and we started our Coorg trip early morning 6 AM from Bangalore on a
Page 3/14
Saturday morning.
We covered Name Dropping Monastery also known as Tibetan Golden Temple on the way
around 12 pm. Reached Monastery at the time of prayer and saw hundreds of Buddhists
praying in front of huge statue of Buddha. The temple is beautiful and decorative and one of the
main attraction of KushalNagar.
Next we explored Nisargadhama a small island formed by Cauvery river. The only way to reach
this island through Rope Bridge which is quite interesting and you can see fishes in Cauvery
water from bridge.
You can see deer rabbits etc. In the bamboo garden. Good place to visit with for children.
After Nisargadhama we headed towards Hotel. We had a booking at Silver Brooke Estate
Homestay in Coorg. This place is not less than a surprise for first time visitor and is situated 8
kms away from Madikeri city. We arrived here after crossing many twists and turns on SH-89.
The place is surrounded by deep ever green rain forest and coffee plantation thrive under
mesmerizing tree shadow.
The place was neat and well organized. The caretaker shown us common areas like library
living room and dining area and our rooms. The rooms had high ceiling with a small transparent
section to let the sunlight in the room and the furniture had a rustic charm of teakwood.
The main hall had a library shelf, and was decorated with artistic lamps of the gone era.
Food served was very homely and we never felt we could ask for more. Owner Revathi and her
Husband made us felt quite comfortable like our own home.
In evening we went to see Abbey waterfall which is open from 6AM to 6 PM. To see the actual
waterfall we need to go down around 300 meters from the main road. The waterfall was full of
water in the month of April also and a rejuvenating place in summers.
After covering Abbey waterfall we reached to see sunset at Rajaji Seat. It took around 15 mins
by car to reach there. It is a park situated at the top of mountain to see the view of Coorg valley.
Inside Park you can see many seasonal flowers and Musical fountain. During our visit musical
fountain was not operational and we were more focused of valley's view and sunset
In evening we reached Silver Brooke Estate and had awesome dinner in magnificent ambience.
Had a great evening and peaceful sleep.
Page 4/14
Morning started in sidewalks of coffee plantation and delicious and filling breakfast.
Our next stop was Dubare Elephant Camp which was near kushalnagar. We checked out from
Silver Brooke and started our journey back. The camp was at other side of River Cauvery and
water was not much in river so we crossed the river by walking on stones. It was a matchless
experience walking into Cauvery water and crossing whole river. We went inside camp and
bathe the elephant by sprinkling Cauvery water but something happened next was more
unexpected.. In return elephant also sprayed water over us by his trunk which I guess they have
been trained to." - Nimisha Sharma, Patna, Apr 10, 2017
A long weekend family get away place
"There is no place called Coorg anymore. It is now called Kodagu.
Almost everyone stays at Madikeri because it lies in the centre of all the location you would be
visiting around Coorg/Kodagu.
You need atleast 3 days to enjoy your stay, else most of the time you would be driving.
Unlike other hill stations, the tourist attractions are located far away from each other.
Our trip was short and unplanned. And, all planning was done on the go. The itinerary we
followed was:
Day 1: Bangalore to Madikeri. Takes approximately 5hrs. Checked in to hotel. Freshened up.
Evening we spent time at Raja Seat, Madikeri Fort. If you have more time left, you can cover
Omkareshwar Temple and Raja's Tomb. They are all near by Madikeri. By evening we were
back in hotel.
Day 2: Start early. We checked out from Hotel. We visited Tala Kaveri. It's around 50 km. Away
from Madikeri. After Tala Kaveri, we came back to Madikeri and moved towards Abbey Falls.
Back to Madikeri. You can have lunch in Madikeri. We then started our journey back to
Bangalore, and on the way is Nisargadhama, a river island. Golden Temple (Buddhist Temple).
Sounds hectic, right! Yes it was hectic but, we wanted to cover as many spots as much
possible. At the same time having comfort of following a easy itinerary.
There are many spots in Coorg which we had to miss intentionally due to shortage of time. But,
we believe that we should keep something for next visit. Isn't it?
Page 5/14
as well as Mobile network is proper at the place. People understand Hindi as well, its an added
advantage. We visited the place in month of June it was chilling atmosphere there. We didn't
take warm clothes but enjoyed shivering there. We enjoyed quad biking, river rafting, trekking,
sight seeing. Particularly we liked river Kaveri's origin place. It feels like more closer to our soul
there. When we visited there was a strong wind current and rainfall, our clothes were wet fully
but still we enjoyed a lot. Altogether it's a nice and wonderful place." - Gaurav Patle,

Coorg - Scotland of India
"Kodagu, commonly known as Coorg, is a district in Karnataka. Framed by the western ghats
mountain range, this place is mainly known for its picturesque beauty as well as other
attractions. It was a 2 day trip and fortunately very well executed one. Day 1: We reached
Coorg at approx 6 am in the morning. There was greenery all around and so pleasant weather.
The temperature was cold and it was kind of drizzling at that time. We checked in to our hotel
and after having idli as breakfast, we headed to the tour of Coorg. From the bus stop Madikeri,
we boarded a bus to Kushalnagar. Kushalnagar is a small town like Madikeri and some of the
major attractions are in that area. We booked an auto for the whole visit. He took us to
Namedropping Monastery in Bylakuppe. It is a huge monastery and the largest Tibet settlement
in south India. It has various temples and golden temple is the centre of attraction. There you
can buy handicrafts and enjoy authentic momos. The place was very peaceful.
Then we headed to Harangi reservoir. It is a kind of big garden and Harangi written in
Hollywood style A good place for clicking pictures. Next was the Dubare elephant camp. It starts
at 4. 30 pm and there was a big queue, we had to wait for approx half an hour to reach to the
camp through boat. Elephant bathing and feeding could be enjoyed here. Nisargadhama was
the next and we headed back to Madikeri.
Day 2:
We checked out of the hotel at 9 am in the morning and our day's aim was to visit places near
Madikeri only. Bhagmanadala and Talakaveri were also on the list but as they were very far and
those were temples only, we dropped the plan. We then went to Abbi falls. Ithad a very good
flow and we were totally fascinated by the viewâ¤
Then the best of the lot Mandalpatti view point. It was at a peak and the view in between was
crazy. The mist and the clouds. It was all so good. At the top, winds were flowing heavily and
you could see only the clouds .. Amazing !!
Then we went back to Madikeri, Madikeri fort was okayish, two elephant statues were there at
the entrance.
Omkareshwara temple was closed at that time. Lastly, it was Raja's seat, famous for its sun set
view. The view from there was awesome, rice **** fields, greenery and clouds .. It was so ****
perfect. The place to relax with the beauty of the nature .. :) We had our returning bus at 10. 30
pm .. So with this came an end to our most awaited trip.
The trip was with 2 of my best friends .. Like style .. ;) The place and the people were perfect .. :)
Mist, greenery and the clouds add to the beauty of the place. The winds will sweep away all the
stress and the inner peace will take hold of you .. :) A journey to the mist and the fresh air
flowing through .. A wonderful place to rewind yourself." - Ananya gupta , , Sep 8, 2016

Cooking with Kodavas
"We left Mangalore around 5:30 in the morning and headed towards Coorg through forests,
patches of hills and valleys. An early morning drive was comfortable and beautiful through
coffee and rubber plantations. We stopped on a small hotel by the highway which was called
Highway Hotel. The hotel makes a very unique cake like dish which is from Kasargod and is
called Kalathappam. It is a delicious rice cake made of ground rice, water, coconut oil, jaggery,
fried onions or shallots and coconut flakes. After washing the food down with a strong cup of
coffee, we headed to Mercara.
We took a road trip from Mangalore to Mercara. At Marcara we were to stay with this beautiful
Kodava couple, Mr & Mrs Ponnappa. They were very kind to take us shopping, teach us the
local cuisine and give us insights about the Kodava culture. Right from buying the famous
Coorgi vinegar, Kachampuli, fresh pumpkins from the vegetable market to buying pork directly
from the butchers, it was a fantastic experience. If you are in Coorg do not miss on buying some
local spices and the famous Coorgi vinegar from the spice shops near the bus stand at
Kannanda Bane. The host, Mrs. Ponnappa loved to prepare their local delicacies for us. It was
a brilliant experience to learn the local dishes Coorgi dishes- kumbla curry, koli curry, pandi
curry and Kadambuttu. Mr. Ponnappa spoke to us about the culture and traditional history of the
Kodavas." - Surjan Singh, Mumbai, Feb 17, 2016
