What is demolition works?
Demolition is the
tearing down of
buildings and other
man-made
structures. Demolition
contrasts with
deconstruction, which
involves taking a
building apart while
carefully preserving
valuable elements for
re-use purposes.

HEALTH SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT
Before the demolition operations
begin:
• Adequate inspection should be made by designated
person.
• If necessary to prevent danger, unstable parts of
structure should be made secure
• All utilities should be effectively disconnected or
shut off at or outside the property line.

HSE International Consultancy

HEALTH SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT
• The danger zone around of the structure should be
adequately fenced off or warning sign posted.

• Before the demolition work, the structure should be free from

any toxic or hazardous substances.

HSE International Consultancy

HEALTH SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT
• Where applicable metal scaffold enclosed with peripheral
nettings should be erected around the building or structure to
be demolished.

Use of explosives

HSE International Consultancy

HEALTH SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT
Use of explosives
• In the controlled demolition industry, building implosion is the
strategic placing of explosive material and timing of its
detonation so that a structure collapses on itself in a matter of
seconds, minimizing the physical damage to its immediate
surroundings.
• Building implosion (which reduces to seconds a process which
could take months or years to achieve by other methods)
typically occurs in urban areas and often involves large landmark
structures.
