Detailed Lesson Plan in English 4

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to;
a) identify the principal parts of the verb;
b) use the principal parts of the verb in a sentence; and
c) appreciate the importance of the principal parts of the verb through recitation.

A verb has four principal parts: the present, the


present participle, the past and the past participle.

The first principal part of the verb is present.

The Principal Parts of Verbs

 Present is the most basic form of the verb it is also


called as the base form of the verb.

 Present participle is formed by combining it with
helping verbs before they can be used as verbs in
sentences. The result will always be a verb
phrase.
 Present Participle: helping verb am, is, are, was,
or were + verb with –ing ending.

The Principal Parts of the Verb


 All verbs form the present participle in the same
way: add –ing to the infinitive/base form.
 A regular verb forms its past and past participle by
adding –d or –ed to its infinitive/base form.
 An irregular verb forms its past and past participle
in some way other than by adding –d or –ed. You
might change vowels, change consonants, change
vowels and consonants, or change nothing.
