1. Find the efficiency of the following riveted joints:
i) Single riveted lap joint of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter rivets having pith of 50 mm.
ii) Double riveted lap of 6 mm plates with 20 mm diameter rivets having a pitch of 65 mm.
Where permissible tensile stress in plate is 120 MPa, permissible shearing stress in rivets 90 MPa and
permissible crushing stress in rivets 180 MPa.
2. A double riveted double cover butt joint in plates 20 mm thick is made with 25 mm diameter rivets at 100
mm pitch. The permissible tensile stress in plate is 120 MPa, permissible shearing stress in rivets is 100
MPa and permissible crushing stress in rivets is 150 MPa. Find the efficiency of the joint.
3. A tie bar in a bridge consists of flat 350 mm wide and 20 mm thick. It is connected to a gusset plate of the
same thickness by a double cover butt joint. Design an economical joint if the tensile stress in plate is 90
MPa, permissible shearing stress in rivets 60 MPa and permissible crushing stress in rivets 150 MPa.
4. Design a lap joint for a mild steel flat tie bar 200 mm X 10 mm thick, using 24 mm rivets. Assume
allowable stresses in tension and compression of the plate material as 112 MPa and 200 MPa respectively
and shear stress of the rivets as 84 MPa. Show the disposition of the rivets for maximum joint efficiency
and determine the joint efficiency. Take diameter of rivet hole as 25.5 mm for a 24 mm diameter rivet.
5. An eccentrically loaded lap riveted joint as shown in Figure 1 is to be designed for a steel bracket as shoe
in the Figure below. The bracket of the plate is 25 mm thick. All rivets are to be of the same size. Load on
the bracket is 50 kN; rivet spacing c = 100 mm; load arm e = 400 mm. Permissible shear stress is 65 MPa
and crushing stress is 120 MPa. Determine the size of the rivets to be used for the joint.

All dimensions are in ‘mm’
6. Find the value of the load ‘P’ for the joint shown in the Figure 2 below based on a working shear stress of
100 MPa for the rivets. The four rivets are equal, each of 20 mm diameter.
7. A steam boiler is to be designed for a working pressure of 2.5 N/mm2 with its internal diameter 1.6 m.
Give the design calculations for the longitudinal and circumferential joints for the following working
stresses for steel plates and rivets:
Tensile strength = 75 MPa; In shear = 60 MPa; In crushing = 125 MPa. Draw the joints to a suitable scale.
