Mulanay sa Pusod ng Paraiso is a movie that depicts the heartwarming and eye-opening

dedication and determination of Dra. Ria Espinosa – a new licensed doctor. She showed her love
for service and passion to her profession when she decided to be a part of the program Doctors
to the Barrios where volunteered doctors are sent to various remote areas of the Philippines in
order to provide proper medical services and ensure public health to the people.

The movie was totally inspiring because it is incorporated with the strong will of Dra.
Espinosa to lend a hand to the poor people of Mulanay. She really knows what she needs to do
and go out of her comfort zone to find ways to solve the problem of the place little by little. She
invoked the want and need for positive change that must be implemented, improved and most
importantly be sustained for the people of Mulanay, most especially the children to live in a healthy
environment with a clean source of water to drink and use, with an available medicine so that
diarrhea, malnutrition and other sickness will not occur anymore or it can be prevented as early
as possible.

The film was also a wake-up call for it really entails a depiction of reality wherein several
factors in the ecosystem influences the optimum level of functioning. Mulanay showcases the
experience of the political factor wherein the people and place needs to have the counterpart fund
for the realization and installation of deep well, the paving and construction of safe roads in order
for farmers to have good income, this is one factor that affects and hinders the possible change
into the barrio because of a sad truth that maybe in reality there is an allotted fund that is
prioritizing public health it’s just that it undergoes budget cuts in the political field. According also
to Norma – the midwife in Mulanay, if they only have proper education, possess a well-off life from
the start and was given good career opportunities then they don’t really need help for they know
what’s the right thing to do and they have the sense of awareness about symptoms of sickness
and others wherein it leads us to the socio-economic factor. The current state of environment of
the place also experienced pollution, water and waste problem, they don’t have the proper comfort
room to release their human wastes, these existing wastes can harm and pollute the coexisting
part of the environment that give us the environment factor. Also, in the first part of the film it was
highlighted that the people of Mulanay has the dependency to quack doctors and faith healing of
priests to cure their illnesses and having doubt on doctors because isolated places like Mulanay
has rooted their beliefs, behavior and lifestyle from their culture and habits.

Mulanay sa Pusod ng Paraiso is a great example as to how a profession can lead to

heartful dedication of passionate vocation whose main desire is to help others and not for their
personal gain. It ignites the wonderful spirit of volunteerism of the people and makes them realize
that they must also take part of this action for better change because as the saying goes
“Everything needs Everyone.”
