Morality is Universal
What is Morality? Morality is a belief of what is right or wrong. It is what people based their
actions on and it greatly affects the decisions that they make. With discussing morality we
encounter ethics. Ethics is a principle that governs a person’s behavior. It is level higher than
morality because it is an established belief among many unlike morality which may only cover
one person. But if a person practices ethics, it will become his morals. For example, there is
Hippocratic Oath for doctors in which they must heed to around the world. It is a universal rule
that they must swear to before they get a license. With these comes the question “Is morality
universal or personal.” In these essay, we will provide arguments to prove that morality is
universal.

The Golden Rule is a rule of ethical conduct based on the Bible which says “Do unto others as
you would have them do unto you.” It means that we should treat others the way we want them
to treat us. We treat others with respect, they will treat will treat us with respect in return.

The Golden Rule, also known as Law of Reciprocity, is a principle known in many religions
and has been long existing. It is rule that should be followed by all of us because it guides us in
doing what is right or wrong. Despite humans thinking differently from each other, it helps in
our decision making whether our actions are moral or ethical thus making morality universal.

Natural Law refers to a moral theory that says that the law should be based on morality and
ethics. It dictates that the law is based on what is correct and is discovered by humans through
reasoning and choosing between good and evil. It is not always straightforward and there is
some flexibility in its application.

Many philosophers such as Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates have expanded the idea of natural law
and each one has their own explanation as to where natural law originated. Thomas Aquinas,
who was greatly influenced by Aristotle, imparts his view that all things have a purpose to
which they work. That purpose can be understood through the natural world and the Bible,
which reveals the purpose as to why God created man. Another is Thomas Hubbes who said
that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator certain unalienable rights.

For example, committing adultery is against the Natural Law ( it defeats the purpose of human
life based on God’s expectations of us). It just shows that morality is universal. It is said the
there is pre-existing morality in all of us. It is innate in us and it may be a part of our nature,
behavior, consciousness.

Moral Universalism is a metha-ethical position in which a moral value can be universal to

everyone or to similarly situated individuals. It is a system that transcends race, nationality,
religion, ethnicity, and gender. It holds moral values that applies to anyone regardless of their
opinion. An example is equality in the labor. Recently, there has been a movement wherein
women demand equal pay as with men. It started with a woman in the U.S. who works in a tv
show. She found out that she has been receiving a lower wage than his male co-worker. She
resign from her job and tweets about this. What happened to her was known to a lot so a
movement began consisting of other women in her field and other women. It just shows that her
moral belief became universal because many other women could relate to her experience.

Humans have a sense of morality in them. It is innate in us and as we grow old, our preference
of what is right and wrong differs. Our beliefs as a person may also be similar to other people’s
beliefs. A belief that is similar to others can be universal. We may be under some kind of ethics,
and that ethics becomes our morality. But we have our conscience that dictates whether it is
right or wrong. Our morality can affect other people or a bigger population making it universal.
It transcends gender, nationality, or any kind of barrier that keeps people unique from each
other. Therefore, my conclusion is morality is universal.
