GAPS AND ISSUES IN HOME ECONOMICS

1.Educational Materials that should serve as resources like books and electronically published
references are not enough that's why students cannot access information that they need and they
find it hard to get information from the internet regarding home economics.
Recommendation:
The right agency should take action on this by having budget allocation for the
procurement of books and shall strengthen research undertaking regarding home economics that
should, consequently be posted in the Internet for the students to quickly access it as their
reference, or make hard copies on their research as books.
2.Concentrated on cooking and sewing despite the fact that there are 5 more branches that need
to be focused as well. This result to the illiteracy of the people about the other branches that's
why they hear "home economics" they will quickly perceive that its only cooking, or if not
cooking sewing.
Recommendation:
Home economics teacher must strongly orient the students that there are 7 branches of
home economics and not only that, they shall also let the students engage in different activities in
every branch. This could also be addressed by the teachers through not giving overemphasis on
cooking and sewing, and by not leaving the other branches undiscussed or leaving them behind.
3. The view that home economics is only for the females as a result of past perspectives.
Cooking, sewing, child development and all other branches are thought to be the responsibility of
the female resulting to discrimination and inequality.
Recommendation:
It would very nice that as early as elementary, individuals are already versed to the idea
that there is inclusivity in home economics. Therefore, elementary teachers must play a vital role
in doing this so that when a male student enroll to in high school, he will not be constrained to
the misconception that home economics is for girls only.
4. Some schools do not reinforce modern technology in teaching home economics making the
students unlearned about the current equipment that would be useful for their home economics
undertaking.
Recommendation:
The right agency or the DepEd must take right action over it by providing budget for the
procurement of equipment that the students can use, and to avoid them from danger caused by
defective equipment.
5. Improper handling of equipment leading to its destruction. Though it is taught to students how
to properly handle them, some of them end up not knowing what to do because some home
economics teachers are lax and incompetent.
Recommendation:
Teacher in charge shall take as it his responsibility to ensure that equipment is handled by
the students rightly, and taken care as well so that they will not end up having nothing to use.
Teachers can do this through wise observation and imposition of practical examination.
6. Home economics does not reach the coverage of all people producing not oriented citizens
leading to poor home management, lack of knowledge on how to handle kids, etc.
Recommendation:
Home economics must not only be taught inside the classroom, but also in the domains
outside it so that everyone will be given the chance, as long as capable, to study home
economics. This can be executed through orientation in the barangay, or in the community. And,
this should not only happen for once every year or month, but once or twice a week or even
thrice a month.
7. Home economics, though also known as family and consumer sciences sometimes fails to
teach students about family and home like proper handling of kids, management of home, and
others. This is for the reason that some of the teachers are incompetent.
Recommendation:
The appropriate agency shall see this as a reason for providing concrete avenues like
proper training and seminars to home economics teachers so that they will be able to know what
to do and how to do the teaching of home economics, provided that, it requires different method
or approach of teaching. And every home economics, must also be oriented about their rights as
well as their obligations.
8. Lack of facility for home economics activities where students can practically apply their
knowledge especially kitchen and sewing facilities.
Recommendation:
The right agency or the DepEd shall make a way to provide enough facilities that will
serve as studios for students to apply their learning and transform these understandings into
physical products to achieve highest possibility of learning.
9. Even though home economics is somehow ratified in the Philippines, students still unfollow
some of its principles that were taught to them like using of appropriate utensils for certain
activity, or do not even follow the proper way cleaning the house. This is a result of the
disoriented citizens in the last generation that produce children who adapted their
inappropriateness.
Recommendation:
Continually improve home economics and ratify it further to eradicate the disorientation
of the people so that those children will be corrected on their improprieties and for their children
to adapt this new good attitude, and to produce long lasting effect.
10. Schools offer TLE subject but some schools are not focusing on Home Economics rather
their scope is on ICT, Agri-fishery arts, or Industrial arts. They don’t delve on it maybe because
of their specification and the incapability of the school when it comes to facility and equipment
that’s why the learnings of the students when they are still in elementary about this subject is not
furtherly harnessed.
Recommendation:
There should be specific subject for Home Economics especially in those schools that do
not offer this for the students to, somehow, know the information and the “know-how” in
cooking, sewing, child-development, sewing and textiles, and in other significant branches of
Home Economics.
11. Due to lack of facilities and equipment, students do not learn or get to see the exact
appearance of an equipment rather they are only imagining what it looks like or even what its
functions are.
Recommendation:
Still, the department of education or the proper agency shall obliged for the acquisition of
equipment so that the learning of the students will not be put at risk.
