Branch : MECHANICAL ENGINEERING Duration: 3 hrs.
Course Code: 16ME6DCMEV Max Marks: 100
Course: Mechanical Vibrations Date: 02.08.2019

Instructions: 1. Answer any FIVE full questions, choosing one full question from each unit.
2. Missing data, if any, may suitably assumed.

UNIT - I
1. a) Taking the mass of spring in to consideration, find an expression for the 06
natural frequency of undamped free vibrations of a spring-mass system.
b) A homogenous cylinder of mass ‘m’ and radius ‘r’ is suspended by a 08
spring of constant k and an inextensible cord as shown in Fig.1. Find the
natural frequency for small oscillations of the cylinder.

Fig.1.
c) A homogenous cylinder of mass ‘m’ and radius ‘r’ linked by a spring of 06
constant k rolls without slipping as shown in Fig.2. Find the natural
frequency for small oscillations of the cylinder.

UNIT - II
2. a) A gun barrel of mass 600 kg has a recoil spring of stiffness 2,94,000 N/m. 10
If the barrel recoils 1.3 metre on firing, determine;
(i) The initial recoil velocity of the barrel,
(ii) Critical damping coefficient of the dashpot which is engaged at the
Revealing of identification, appeal to
end of recoil stroke,
(iii) Time required for barrel to return to a position 50mm from initial
position.
b) Derive an expression for the logarithmic decrement. 04
c) Determine the Critical damping co-efficient and Damped natural frequency 06
of the system shown in Fig.3.

Fig.3.
Important Note: Completing your answers, compulsorily draw diagonal cross lines on the remaining blank pages.

UNIT - III
3. a) Give the salient features of Dimensionless plot on Magnification Vs 06
Frequency ratio for different values of damping factor.
b) A TV set of 20 kg mass must be isolated from a machine vibrating with an 08
amplitude of 0.05 mm at 500cpm. The set is mounted on four isolators,
each having a spring scale of 31,400 N/m and damping factor of 392 N-
sec/m.
(i) What is the amplitude of vibration of TV set?
(ii) What is the dynamic load on each isolator due to vibration?
c) The springs of an automobile trailer are compressed 0.1 metre under its 06
own weight. Find the critical speed when the trailer is travelling over a
road with a profile approximated by a sine wave of amplitude 0.08 m and
wave length of 14 m. What will be the amplitude of vibration at 60 km/hr.?

OR
4. a) A rotor has a mass of 12 kg and is mounted midway on a 24 mm diameter 06
horizontal shaft supported at the ends by two bearings. The bearings are 1
metre apart and the shaft rotates at 2400 rpm. If the centre of mass of the
rotor is 0.11 mm away from the geometric centre of the rotor due to certain
manufacturing defect, find the amplitude of the steady state vibration and
dynamic force transmitted to the bearing. Assume E = 200 GN/m2.
b) A disc of mass 4 kg is mounted midway between bearings which may be 14
assumed to be simple supports. The bearing span is 48cm. The steel shaft
which is horizontal is 9mm in diameter. The CG of the disc is displaced
3mm from the geometric centre. The equivalent viscous damping of the
system may be taken as 49 N-sec/m. If the shaft rotates at 760rpm, find the
maximum stress in the shaft and compare it with dead load stress in the
shaft. Also find the power required to drive the shaft at this speed.
evaluator will be treated as malpractice.
