UAS NME (Pak Nasikin) Tahun ajaran 2017/2018

1. A new process has been proposed to produce ethylene (C 2H4) gas from propane (C3H8) gas at
atmospheric pressure by the following reaction
C3H8 (g) + 2O2 (g)  C2H4 (g) + CO2 (g) + 2H2O (g)
The product leave the system at 800 K and the C 3H8 enters at 450 K while the O2 enters at 300 K.
In the process, C3H8 (g) is used in 25% excess (of the amount shown in the equation), but the
overall fraction conversion of the C3H8 is only 40%. How much heat is added to or removed from
the process per mole of C3H8 feed to the process?

2. A turbine is installed between the supply stream at 1800 psia and 250°F and the outlet stream.
The exit stream from the turbine is at 800 psia and 80°F, and 25 Btu/lb of fluid are lost from the
poorly insulated turbine. Indicate the outlet states rom the turbine and the throttling valve as
points on the CO2 chart. See Figure P5.78
(a) How much useful work is extracted in the turbine?
(b) The exhaust from the turbine enters a throttling valve and leaves at 140 psia and 30% liquid,
but the valve is not perfectly insulated. What is the temperature of the exhaust stream at
140 psia?
(c) How much heat is lost from the poorly insulated valve?

3. An office building requires water at two different floors. A large pipe brings the city water supply
into the building in the basement level, where a booster pump is located. The water leaving the
pump is transported by smaller insulated pipes to the second and fourth floors, where the water
in needed. Calculate the minimum amount of work per unit time (in Horsepower) that the pump
must do in order to deliver the necessary water, as indicated in Figure. (Minimum refers to the
fact that you should neglect the friction and pump energy losses in your calculations). The water
does not change temperature.
