COMPARISON BETWEEN RA 5527 AND SENATE BILL 2473- MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

The Republic Act 5527 f 1969 is an introduction to the Medical Technology Law of
1969. Definition of terms were discussed as well as the functions, roles, accreditation, and
violations of board members and medical technologists. Republic Act 5527 was published in
1969 and until now, there was no revision in the law (the law as not published). Senate Bill no.
2473 or The Medical Technology Act of 2014 has drastic changes and developments in
comparison to the RA 5527. It stated in the S.B no. 2473 that some statements in the RA 5527 no
longer applies to the present day. The senate bill expanded the work description of medical
technologist that they are not only for the realm of clinical laboratories but also to other areas. In
comparison to the RA 5527, there are addition to the subjects taken up by medical technology
students such as molecular diagnostics and cytogenetic technologies. Medical technologists are
also accredited to drug testing, phlebotomy, and teaching of professional courses.

In the RA 5527, the law was not open to international relations or global competitiveness.
The law was not even open to foreign students or professors. In comparison to the S.B. 2473, the
senate bill is ensuring global competitiveness and developing the law to improve the practice of
medical technology. There were a lot of addition information in the Senate Bill n. 2473
compared to the RA 5527 such as the Technical Committee for Medical Technology Education
is established under the Commission on Higher Education- Office of Programs and Standards.
The functions, policies, standards, and guidelines of this said committee are included in the
senate bill. Continuing Professional Development for Medical Technology and the standard
salary for medical technologists who are working in the government was also included in the
senate bill, though it was not stated in the RA 5527. These are the comparison of the RA 5527
and S.B no. 2473 of 2014.
