Objectives:
• Take a selfie of yourself using an exciting filter on the
Snapchat app. Take a screen shot of this image and
email it to me at altshulerh@hawthorn73.org. (NOTE:
You must choose a filter where your face, although
distorted, is visible! Also, make sure your face takes up
the majority of the photograph, as opposed to
background space.)
• After I print out the image, use the grid method to draw
the image on drawing paper (draw a one-inch-by-one-
inch grid on the photograph and a two-inch-by-two-inch
grid on your drawing paper). There should be the SAME
amount of squares on your photograph and your drawing
paper. The image or the paper can be trimmed if
necessary so that both have the same amount of squares.
• Draw contour (outline) of the portrait first, focusing on the outline of all the details. .
• Once the details are in place, add shadows and highlights; shade using small circular strokes
of pencil with different amounts of pressure to achieve a range in value (dark darks, light lights
and everything in between!) Optional: Use a blending tool to help you achieve smooth pencil
strokes.
• LAST STEP: pick a major feature on your self-portrait to emphasize with your choice of
colored media. For example, you can choose to emphasize your eyes, hair, clothing, nose,
etc. You can choose to render them with colored pencils, markers, or watercolors.
