TITLE WATER QUALITY

INTRODUCTION
Water quality is assessment of the physical, chemical and biological
characteristics of water. It is most frequently used with reference to a
set of standards which the compliance can be assessed properly. The
standards are used to assess water quality which relates to drinking
water, safety of human contact, and for health of ecosystems.

Physical characteristics are the characteristic of water defined by the

appearance, taste, odour, and ‘feel’ of water determined by people
experiences when they drink or use the water. Chemical characteristics
are defined in terms of the use and application of chemicals in
determining specific water quality parameters. Biological
characteristics are referring to the water quality assessment and
determination involving living microorganisms such as bacteria.
PREAMBLE
OBJECTIVES

1. To measure the concentration of prominent water quality

parameters in water sample.
2. To analyze data and interpret the results of the water quality
experiment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the laboratory activities, students would be able:

1. To acquire and develop sublime psychomotor skills in conducting
laboratory experiments.
2. To work as a team, demonstrate leadership and enhance
communication skills through discussion.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
A new water treatment plant will be constructed in a new residential
area. As a civil engineer, you are responsible on the water quality

assessment of the project. Suggest the relevant water tests that need
to be undertaken and discuss the possible causes for quality
deterioration and mitigation measures if they exceed allowable limit.

Each group have to collect their own sample from the possible sources
that can be used as water supply. The group is required to design and
conduct suitable and related laboratory test to obtain the relevant
water parameters to address the water quality assessment.

APPARATUS
Each group must identify the suitable apparatus needed for the
experiment themselves.

PROCEDURES
Based on the problem statement, each group need to determine which
parameters are suitable for testing. You are also required to search for
WAYS AND MEANS the relevant and correct procedures to carry out the experiment. The
document must be made ready for verification by the instructor during
the laboratory activity.

DATA ANALYSIS
All data collected and observed during the test must be tabulated in
proper format for easy verification and presentation of the technical
report

RESULTS, ANALYSIS AND CONCLUSION

Each group is required to submit a technical report of the laboratory
results highlighting the apparatus used, the procedures undertaken for
the test, data acquisition process, analysis carried out and the
relevancy of the set-out output to address the given problem. The
results should also discuss the suitability of the water sample as water
RESULTS supply with strong supporting points and evidence. The format of the
technical report can be done according to the creativity and the
discretion of the group members.

The report must be submitted within SEVEN (7) days after the
completion of the test.
