Local anesthetics inhibit initiation and conduction of sensory nerve Indication for use: to decrease post op pain
impulses by altering the influx of sodium an efflux of potassium
neurons slowing or stopping pain. Liposome formulation prolongs the
length of action

Complications Medication Administration


Side effects: CNS TOXICITY, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, peripheral edema, Route:
prolonged AV conduction, tachycardia, constipation, nausea, vomiting, pruritus, anemia, IV
back pain, muscle spasm, hypersensitivity reactions including ANAPHYLACTOID-LIKE
REACTIONS and LARYNGEAL EDEMA, fever, procedural pain.

Dosage: 100mg

Contraindications/Precautions
May cause fetal death or bradycardia when used for obstetrical
paravervical block
Nursing Interventions
Caution in impaired cardiovascular function, hepatic disease, renal
impairment Nursing assessment:
Assess for infiltration,
Monitor cardiovascular status
Monitor Resp status
Monitor pain level
Interactions
Drug to drug: should not be admin with lidocaine. Should not be mixed
with other anesthetics

Client Education
May cause temporary loss of activity in infiltrated
area
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness
Decrease level of pain
