INDUSTRY ANALYSIS

Industry Analysis

6
An investment company is a corporation or trust engaged in the business of investing the
pooled capital of investors in financial securities. This is most often done either through a
closed-end fund or an open-end fund (also referred to as a mutual fund). In the U.S., most
investment companies are registered with and regulated by the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) under the Investment Company Act of 1940. An investment company is
also known as "fund company" or "fund sponsor.

Investment companies are business entities, both privately and publicly owned, that manage,
sell and market funds to the public. The main business of an investment company is to hold
and manage securities for investment purposes, but they typically offer investors a variety of
funds and investment services, which include portfolio management, recordkeeping,
custodial, legal, accounting and tax management services

KEY TAKEAWAYS
 An investment company is a corporation or trust engaged in the business of investing
pooled capital into financial securities.
 Investment companies can be privately or publicly owned, and they engage in the
management, sale, and marketing of investment products to the public.
 Investment companies make profits by buying and selling shares, property, bonds,
cash, other funds and other assets.

An investment company can be a corporation, partnership, business trust or limited liability

company (LLC) that pools money from investors on a collective basis. The money pooled is
invested, and the investors share any profits and losses incurred by the company according to
each investor’s interest in the company. For example, assume an investment company pooled
and invested $10 million from a number of clients, who represent the fund company's
shareholders. A client who contributed $1 million will have a vested interest of 10% in the
company, which would also translate into any losses or profits earned.

Investment companies are categorized into three types: closed-end funds, mutual funds (or
open-end funds) and unit investment trusts (UITs). Each of these three investment companies
must register under the Securities Act of 1933 and the Investment Company Act of 1940.
Units or shares in closed-end funds are typically offered at a discount to their net asset value
(NAV) and are traded on stock exchanges. Investors who want to sell shares will sell them to
other investors on the secondary market at a price determined by market forces and
participants, making them not redeemable. Since investment companies with a closed-end
structure issue only a fixed number of shares, back-and-forth trading of the shares in the
market has no impact on the portfolio.

Mutual funds have a floating number of issued shares and sell or redeem their shares at their
current net asset value by selling them back to the fund or the broker acting for the fund. As

7
investors move their money in and out of the fund, the fund expands and contracts,
respectively. Open-ended funds are often restricted to investing in liquid assets, given that the
investment managers have to plan in a way that the fund is able to meet the demands for
investors who may want their money back at any time. Like mutual funds, unit investment
trusts are also redeemable, as units held by the trust can be sold back to the investment
company.

Investment companies make profits by buying and selling shares, property, bonds, cash, other
funds and other assets. The portfolio that is created using the pool of funds is usually
diversified and managed by an expert fund manager, who can choose to invest in specific
markets, industries or even unlisted businesses that are at early stages in their development.
In return, clients gain access to a wide array of investment products that they normally would
not have been able to access. The success of the fund depends on how effective the
manager’s strategy is. In addition, investors should be able to save on trading costs since the
investment company is able to gain economies of scale in operations. An investment company
is a financial institution principally engaged in investing in securities. These companies in the
United States were regulated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and must be
registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Investment companies invest money
on behalf of their clients who, in return, share in the profits and losses.

 Investment companies are designed for long-term investment, not short-term trading.
 Investment companies do not include brokerage companies, insurance companies, or
banks.
 In United States securities law, there are at least three types of investment companies:
[1]
 Open-End Management Investment Companies (mutual funds)
 Face amount certificates companies: very rare.
 Management companies
 Closed-End Management Investment Companies (closed-end funds)
 UITs (unit investment trusts): only issue redeemable units.

In general, each of these investment companies must register under the Securities Act of 1933
and the Investment Company Act of 1940.[2] A fourth and lesser-known type of investment
company under the Investment Company Act of 1940 is a Face-Amount Certificate
Company. A major type of company not covered under the Investment Company Act is
private investment companies, which are simply private companies that make investments in
stocks or bonds, but are limited to under 250 investors and are not regulated by the SEC.[3]
These funds are often composed of very wealthy investors

PESTLE ANALYSIS OF CAPITAL HEIGHT
POLITICAL:
The capital market of India is very vulnerable. India has been politically instable in the past
but it is a little politically stable now-a-days.the political instability of the country has a very
strong impact on the capital market. The share market of India changes as the political
changes took place. The BSE Index, SENSEX goes up and down with any kind of small and
big political news, like, if there is news that a particular political party has withdrawn its
support from the ruling party, and then the capital market will go down with a bang. The
capital market of India is too weak and is based on speculations. The political stability of the
country is very important for the stability and growth of capital market in India. The political
imbalance or balance of the country is the major factor in deciding the capital market of
India. The political factors include:

 employment laws
 tax policy
 trade restrictions and tariffs
 political stability

ECONOMICAL:
The economical measures taken by the government of India has a very strong relationship
with the capital market. Whenever the annual budget is announced the capital market goes up
and down with the economical policies of the government .If the policies are supportive to
the companies then the capital market takes it positively and if there is any other policy that is
not supportive and it is not welcomed then the capital market goes down.

Like, in the case of allocation of 3-G spectrum, those companies that got the license for 3-G,
they witnessed sharp growth in their share values so the economic policies play a major part
in the growth and decline of the capital market and again if there is relaxation on any kind of
taxes on items of automobile industry then the share of automobile sector goes up and
virtually strengthen the capital market .The economical factors include:

 inflation rate
 Economic growth
 Exchange rates
 Interest rates

19
SOCIAL:
India is a country of unity in diversity .India is socially rich but the capital market is not very
attached with the social factors .Yes, there is some relation between the social factors with
the capital market. If there is any big social factor then to some extent it affects the capital
market but small social factors don’t impact at all. Like, there was opposition of reliance
fresh in many cities and many stores were closed. The share prices of the reliance fresh went
down but the impact was on and individual firm there was not much impact on the capital
market on a whole the social factors have not much of impact on the capital market in India.
The social factors include:

 emphasis on safety
 career attitudes
 population growth rate
 age distribution
 health consciousness

TECHNOLOGICAL:
The technological factors have not that much effect on the capital market. India is
technological backward country. Same as social factors, technological factor can have an
effect on an individual form but it cannot have a big impact on a whole of capital market. The
Bajaj got a patent on its dts-i technology, and launched it in its new bike but it does not effect
on capital market. The technological change in India is always on a lower basis and it doesn’t
effect on country as a whole. The technological factors include: R&D activity

 Technology incentives
 Rate of technological change
 Automation

ENVIORNMENTAL FACTORS:
Initially The environmental factors don’t play a vital role in the capital market. But the time
has changed and people are more eco-friendly. This is really bothering them that if any firm
or industry is environment friendly or not. An increasing number of people, investors,
corporate executives are paying importance to these facts, the capital markets still see the
environment as a liability. They belie that it is of no use for their strategy. The environmental
performance is even under-valued by the markets.

LEGAL FACTORS:
20
Legal factors play an important role in the development and sustain the capital market. Legal
issues relating to any industry or firm decides the fate of the capital market. If the govt. of
India or the parliament introduces a new law that can affect the running of the industry then
the industry will be demotivated and this demonization will lead to the demonization of the
investors and will result in the fall of capital market. Like after the Hardhat Mehta scam, new
rules and regulations were introduced like PAN card was made necessary for trading.

SWOT ANALYSIS

21
Strengths of Capital Height Financial – Internal Strategic Factors
 As one of the leading companies in its industry, Capital HEIGHT Financial has
numerous strengths that help it to thrive in the market place. These strengths not only
help it to protect the market share in existing markets but also help in penetrating new
markets. Some of the strengths of Capital HEIGHT Financial are –
 Successful track record of integrating complimentary firms through mergers &
acquisition. It has successfully integrated number of technology companies in the past
few years to streamline its operations and to build a reliable supply chain.
 High level of customer satisfaction – the company with its dedicated customer
relationship management department has able to achieve a high level of customer
satisfaction among present customers and good brand equity among the potential
customers.
 Highly skilled workforce through successful training and learning programs. Capital
HEIGHT Financial is investing huge resources in training and development of its
employees resulting in a workforce that is not only highly skilled but also motivated
to achieve more.
 Reliable suppliers – It has a strong base of reliable supplier of raw material thus
enabling the company to overcome any supply chain bottlenecks.
 Strong dealer community – It has built a culture among distributor & dealers where
the dealers not only promote company’s products but also invest in training the sales
team to explain to the customer how he/she can extract the maximum benefits out of
the products.

Weakness of Capital HEIGHT Financial – Internal Strategic Factors

Weakness are the areas where Capital HEIGHT Financial can improve upon. Strategy is
about making choices and weakness are the areas where a firm can improve using SWOT
analysis and build on its competitive advantage and strategic positioning.

The marketing of the products left a lot to be desired. Even though the product is a success in
terms of sale but its positioning and unique selling proposition is not clearly defined which
can lead to the attacks in this segment from the competitors.

Not highly successful at integrating firms with different work culture. As mentioned earlier
even though Capital HEIGHT Financial is successful at integrating small companies it has its
share of failure to merge firms that have different work culture.

The company has not being able to tackle the challenges present by the new entrants in the
segment and has lost small market share in the niche categories. Capital HEIGHT Financial
has to build internal feedback mechanism directly from sales team on ground to counter these
challenges.

Need more investment in new technologies. Given the scale of expansion and different
geographies the company is planning to expand into.

Opportunities for Capital HEIGHT Financial – External Strategic Factors

22
Opening up of new markets because of government agreement – the adoption of new
technology standard and government free trade agreement has provided Capital HEIGHT
Financial an opportunity to enter a new emerging market.

Decreasing cost of transportation because of lower shipping prices can also bring down the
cost of Capital HEIGHT Financial’s products thus providing an opportunity to the company -
either to boost its profitability or pass on the benefits to the customers to gain market share.

Economic uptick and increase in customer spending, after years of recession and slow growth
rate in the industry, is an opportunity for Capital HEIGHT Financial to capture new
customers and increase its market share. The market development will lead to dilution of
competitor’s advantage and enable Capital HEIGHT Financial to increase its competitiveness
compare to the other competitors. The new technology provides an opportunity to Capital
HEIGHT Financial to practices differentiated pricing strategy in the new market. It will
enable the firm to maintain its loyal customers with great service and lure new customers
through other value oriented propositions.New trends in the consumer behavior can open up
new market for the Capital HEIGHT Financial . It provides a great opportunity for the
organization to build new revenue streams and diversify into new product categories
too.Government green drive also opens an opportunity for procurement of Capital HEIGHT
Financial products by the state as well as federal government contractors. The new taxation
policy can significantly impact the way of doing business and can open new opportunity for
established players such as Capital HEIGHT Financial to increase its profitability.

Threats Capital HEIGHT Financial Facing - External Strategic Factors

Changing consumer buying behavior from online channel could be a threat to the existing
physical infrastructure driven supply chain model.

Imitation of the counterfeit and low quality product is also a threat to Capital HEIGHT
Financial’s product especially in the emerging markets and low income markets.

The company can face lawsuits in various markets given - different laws and continuous
fluctuations regarding product standards in those markets.

No regular supply of innovative products – Over the years the company has developed
numerous products but those are often response to the development by other players.
Secondly the supply of new products is not regular thus leading to high and low swings in the
sales number over period of time.

New technologies developed by the competitor or market disruptor could be a serious threat
to the industry in medium to long term future.

Liability laws in different countries are different and Capital HEIGHT Financial may be
exposed to various liability claims given change in policies in those markets.

Limitations of SWOT Analysis for Capital HEIGHT Financial

23
Although the SWOT analysis is widely used as a strategic planning tool, the analysis does
have its share of limitations.

Certain capabilities or factors of an organization can be both a strength and weakness at the
same time. This is one of the major limitations of SWOT analysis . For example changing
environmental regulations can be both a threat to company it can also be an opportunity in a
sense that it will enable the company to be on a level playing field or at advantage to
competitors if it able to develop the products faster than the competitors.

SWOT does not show how to achieve a competitive advantage, so it must not be an end in
itself.

The matrix is only a starting point for a discussion on how proposed strategies could be
implemented. It provided an evaluation window but not an implementation plan based on
strategic competitiveness of Capital HEIGHT Financial

SWOT is a static assessment - analysis of status quo with few prospective changes. As
circumstances, capabilities, threats, and strategies change, the dynamics of a competitive
environment may not be revealed in a single matrix.

SWOT analysis may lead the firm to overemphasize a single internal or external factor in
formulating strategies. There are interrelationships among the key internal and external
factors that SWOT does not reveal that may be important in devising strategies.

FINDINGS

Many of the investors are aware of Investement funds but most of their perception is not
positive due to lack of information about the investment schemes.

Investors are mainly concerned with the risk factors of investment funds.

The investors who have invested in investment funds mainly go for it because of liquidity &
tax exemption.

There are numerous schemes of investment funds about which common man is not aware
of.

Most of the respondents don‘t have proper knowledge about the mutual funds and that is
why probably they don‘t invest in investment fund.

Average savings of the people vary between 35% & 40%. This no doubt a good figure to take
in account.
