Title Why SKF Spherical Roller Bearings 23032 CC/W33, 23036 CC/W33, 23038
CC/W33, 23044 CC/W33 over competitors bearings
Name Screw Conveyor for rubber feeding operation
Company Bridgestone India Pvt. Ltd. Pune.
We have taken an initiative to ensure why SKF bearings can bring in a better life, through
our superior designs and state of the art manufacturing process, when compared to our
Competitors.
Most of our competitors still manufacture spherical roller bearings to our 1919 design i.e.
integral flanges on either side of inner-ring and in the center. This design causes stresses

on the flanges, high sliding friction on the roller faces/flanges, temperature generation due
to increased friction and lower permissible speeds.
In competitors’ Design, the Guide ring does not exist which would, in turn mean higher
operating temperatures and lower speeds.
SKF spherical roller bearings do not have flanges on the inner ring as shown in our
design. The floating guide ring in our bearings controls unloaded rollers. This lowers/
reduces friction. Additionally floating guide ring improves distribution of lubrication on
roller/raceway. This lowers /reduces friction. The presence of this guide ring is unique
to SKF design. No other competitor bearing has the guide ring.

Roller Skew during motion of bearing
2. Asymmetrical Rollers:
As long as the bearing has no integral flange, symmetrical rollers self adjust and seek the
equilibrium position where the roller load is symmetrically distributed along the length of
the roller. In this position, the internal loads in the bearing are minimized.
a. Hence very high carrying capacity and longer bearing service life under all load
Combinations. Reduced sensitivity to form and angle the errors of bearing seating.
a. Edge stress are induced which causes the wear of the raceways.
b. High loading conditions.

3. SKF X-Bite Ultra Clean Steel :
SKF Explorer Spherical Roller Bearings are made of patented SKF X BITE STEEL which is
extremely clean; having reduced oxygen level that provides greater strength, surface
hardness and dimensional stability up to 200 Deg C. Higher Surface Hardness results in
reduces wear, leading to extended service life .

5. Metallic cages-
SKF Explorer design in CC and E series of spherical roller bearings, have hardened steel
cages. Since hardened steel cage has lower wear rate in comparison with brass cages as
is malleable and soft, it improves the bearing life tremendously. Additionally the pronged
brass cages (cantilever effect with forces) are weaker in comparison with hardened steel
cages (u-type loading) of our CC design
Competitors: Majority of the spherical roller bearing manufacturers are having pronged
type of brass cages as their standard design. Some have even tried with polyamide

cages. Higher wear of brass cage acts as debris/contamination in the raceway and
reduces bearing service life.
i) Hardened steel has lower wear rate than the brass cage
ii) Brass cages are weaker & will wear out faster. The particles of brass cage
Itself will act as debris & contamination for the bearing & will reduce the
life of the bearings.

6. Power Loss Calculation
As it is very evident, Power loss plays a very important role in case of efficient running of
the bearings. If we consider the Frictional Moment generated inside the bearing, this
plays a key factor contributing to Power Losses in the bearing, a simple calculation
illustrates the effect of not choosing SKF,
Frictional Moment, M = 0.5 x f x P x d,
Consequent Power Loss, N = (1.05 x M x n) / 10000
The values for Co-efficient of Friction obtained from catalogue.
For SKF Explorer Bearing,

M = 0.5 x 0.0018 x P x 220 M = 0.5 x 0.0025 x P x 220
= 0.198 P = 0.275 P
Hence, as pretty much evident from the above calculation, that SKF Explorer
Bearings yield lower Power losses, as our Competitors Power Losses are higher to
the tune of 20 %.
All the above mentioned features, truly sets apart SKF Explorer Performance Class far
ahead of any of our nearest competitors. And we are sure that you would also appreciate
that all these comes a slightly higher premium.
Hope the above inferences and consequent recommendations and finding be useful to
you. Should you have any problems and require any clarifications to the following
recommendations, please feel free to contact.
