Experiment description:

Objectives:-

 Measuring the angle of an external taper.

 Measuring the angle of an internal taper .
 Measuring the small and large diameters of the external and internal taper
of a work piece.

Description of instruments & devices:-

 Surface plates : a flat level plain used as a reference surface for

measurements.
 Gauge blocks : blocks of certain thickness stacked up together to give
various gauging lengths.

Figure 1 A set of gauging blocks

 Vernier caliper : an instrument that can be used to take both inside and
outside measurements for a work piece.

3
 Measuring rolls : cylinders usually 50mm in length and 12,5mm in
diameter , they should be free from taper and out of roundness and they
should be equal in size.
 Measuring balls : two balls of different size , the size depends on the work
piece’s dimensions.

Procedures:

1-External taper :-

Figure 2 Schematic diagram of the procedures done to obtain the angle

Figure 3 A measuring roll

1- Let the work piece rest on a surface plate, make two equal height (h1)
of gauge block stacks and place them on the sides of the piece.
2- Rest the measuring rolls on top of the stacks.
3- Measure the distance m1 by the Vernier caliper.
4- Change the gauge stacks heights to h2 .
5- Rest the rolls again on top of the new stacks.
6- Measure distance m2 by the Vernier caliper.
7- Determine the heights h1 , h2

4
8- Determine the angle from the corresponding equation given in the data
and result section .
9- Replace the gauge blocks with the measuring rolls .
10-Measure the distance m and h using the Vernier caliper.
11-Determine S and E using the corresponding equation in the data and
result section .
12-Draw the external taper of the work piece according to the results u
obtained by your measurements

2- internal taper:-

Figure 4 Schematic of internal taper setup

1- Place the work piece properly on a surface plate.

2- Measure the diameter of the balls used in the experiment using a Vernier
caliper.
3- Place the small ball then the large ball inside the taper.
4- Measure m and M by Vernier depth gauge.
5- Determine α from corresponding equation in the data/results section.
6- Redo the setup but with out the use of the small ball.
7- Determine t from the corresponding equation in the data/results section.
8- Measure the height of the work piece.
9- Determine S from the corresponding equation in the data/ results section.
10-Draw the internal tapered work piece according to the results obtained by
your measurements.

Data and results :

Data obtained :

External:-

h1=0mm

h2=5mm

c1=c2=12mm

m1=58.7mm

m2=59.8mm

Internal:-

d=25.4mm

D=31mm

M=16.4mm

m=67mm

6
Prosedure to obtaind results :

Using the following equations we get the following results

External :-

m2 – m1

tan α= ------------------------------------------

2( h2 - h1 )

S=m-2j-2r

Β=90- α

tan b/2 = r/j

j=r/tan(b/2)

e=s+2h tanα

7
Internal :-

2(m-M)

Cosec α = -------------------------- -1
D-d

t=2 tan α (M + D/2 + D/2 cscα)

s= t – 2 h tanα

8
Discussion and conclusion :

during the experiment of external taper we run into the following errors 1- guage
blocks not stacking up correctly we can reduce the error by polishing the surface
with a specified mate , 2- the Vernier caliper moves the gauge blocks and
measuring rolls we solve this problem by holding the varnier caliper with an angle
while takeing the measurement and not firmly closeing it on the workpiece and
gauge blocks and rolls instead we keep it a bit loose yet the jaws of the
instrument get to be in the right position , 3- the balls touch when put inside the
work piece , we replace them with other balls of the correct dimensions. We
conclude that this experiment need precise measurements or els the calculations
will be wrong and such precision needs a good skilled user .
