Faculty-in-Charge S.RAMASWAMY & B.JACOB RUBASINGH
Part A (8 x 2 =16 Marks ) [ (U)-Understand, (R)- Remember ] Cos
1 What is the difference between an angular gear and a miter gear? CO3-R
What kind of contact occurred between worm and wheel? How does this differ from CO3-R
2 other gears?

3 What is virtual number of teeth in bevel gears? CO3-R

4 How bevel gears are manufactured? CO3-U

5 What is virtual number of teeth in bevel gears? CO4-R

6 Define progression ratio. CO4-R

7 What are preferred numbers? CO4-R

8 What is R20 serious? CO4-R

Part B (3 x 13 =39 Marks) [ (A)- Apply] Cos
9. Design a pair of strength bevel gears for two shafts whose axis are at right angles. The
CO3 - A
(a) power transmitted is 25 kW. The speed of pinion is 300 rpm and the gear is 120 rpm.
OR
(b) Design a bevel gear drive to transmit 7.5 W at 1440 rpm. Gear ratio 3. Pinion and gear CO3 - A
are made of forged C45 steel. Life of gears 10,000 hrs. Assume surface hardened heat
treatment and IS quality 6.
10. The input to worm gear shaft is 18 kW at 600 rpm. Speed ratio is 20. The worm is to be
(a) hardened steel and the wheel is made of chilled phosphor bronze. Considering wear and CO3 - A
strength, design worm and worm wheel.

OR
(b) A steel worm running at 240 rpm receives 1.5 kW from its shaft. The speed reduction is
10:1. Design the drive so as to have an efficiency of 80%. Also determine the cooling
area required, if the temperature rise is restricted to 45 0C. Take overall heat transfer CO3 - A
coefficient as 10W/m2 0C.

11. A six speed gear box is required to provide output speeds in the range of 125 to 400
(a) rpm with a step ratio 1.25 and transmit a power 5 kW at 710 rpm. Draw the speed
CO4 - A
diagram and kinematic diagram. Determine the number of teeth , module and face
width of all gears, and length of the gear box.
OR
(b) A nine speed gear box , used as head stock gear box of a turret lathe , Is to provide a CO4 - A
speed range of 180 rpm to 1800 rpm using standard step ratio. Draw the speed diagram
and kinematic arrangement showing number of all gears.

Part B (1 x 15 =15 Marks) [ (A)- Apply] Cos

12 A gear box is to give 18 speeds for a spindle of a milling machine. Maximum and
(a) minimum speeds of the spindle are to be around 650 and 35 rpm respectively. Find the
speed ratios which will give the desired speeds and draw the structural diagram and CO4 - A
kinematic arrangements of the drive.

(B) Design a 12 speed gear box. The required speed range is 100 tp 355 rpm. Draw the ray
diagram, kinematic arrangement and find the number of teeth on each gear. Check for CO4 - A
the interference.
