I) Preparation of Fe(acac)3

Acac- ion and Fe3+ ion form a complex of formula Fe(acac)3 where Fe3+ is octahedrally coordinated, with a
high spin electronic configuration.
Synthesis: into 25 mL of distilled water, dissolve finely-ground iron(II) salt (1.2 g,). Add a solution of
acetylacetone in 10 mL methanol (in order to obtain an acetylacetone/iron molar ratio =4), over a period of
about 15 minutes to the iron(II) solution with vigorous stirring. To the resulting blood red solution is added
a solution of sodium acetate (ca.5.1 g) in about 15 ml of distilled water, over a 5 minute period (keep
stirring!). A red precipitate separates, and upon the precipitation of the red crystalline solid, heat the flask to
about 80ºC using a hot plate, and keep at this temperature for about 15 minutes while continuing to rapidly
stir. Allow to cool to room temperature, and then place the flask in a ice water bath. Isolate the product by
filtration, wash with cold distilled water, and allow the compound to air dry and after dry in an oven at
T<100°C.
