Baker – landing nipples

ŸTwo Baker systems – Standard and Surset

ŸFirst we will concentrate on Baker standard equipment

Schlumberger Private
ŸThere are two standard landing nipples

ŸBoth are nogo landing nipples

ŸBoth have a profile, seal bore and nogo

ŸEven though they have nogo shoulders Baker have a selective

system due to the lock type

Baker F landing nipples

ŸTop nogo landing nipple – the nogo is above the

seal bore

ŸID of the nipple is the seal bore dimension

Schlumberger Private
ŸWill accept the following locks

M,G,F and W

S – selective due to lock

All L Sliding side doors have an F nipple profile

ŸBottom nogo landing nipple – the nogo is below

the seal bore

ŸID of the nipple is the dimension of the nogo

shoulder, smaller than seal bore

ŸWill accept the following locks

Z,R,E and K

Always installed below an F nipple of the same

nominal size

Flowing and non flowing applications

ŸEqualizing assemblies can be added to all the

standard locks to form plugs

ŸGauge carries (bomb hangers) can be added

Schlumberger Private
to two locks to be used in flowing applications

ŸW lock in the top nogo F nipple

ŸZ lock in the bottom nogo R nipple

ŸV packing are attached to Equalizing devices

ŸAbove is shown the title given to a standard Baker plug

ŸFrom the title the correct nipple, lock and equalizing

assembly/flow control device can be selected

Equalizing devices

ŸThree types used in standard Baker plugs

ŸH – Prong type, prong run and set after plug body is set.

Schlumberger Private
2 runs to set and 2 runs to pull

ŸG – Prong type, prong run with plug body. 1 run to set

and 2 runs to pull

ŸR – Melon type, 1 run to set and 1 run to pull

Probes, Shanks and Prongs

ŸStandard Baker require additions to run and pull the

devices

Schlumberger Private
ŸTo run the device a Shank is attached to the running
tool

ŸTo pull the device a Probe is attached to the pulling tool

ŸFor equalization Prongs are used

Probes, Shanks and Prongs

ŸSimilar probes can have

modifications, e.g.

Schlumberger Private
ŸA & AC probes cannot be
used for the same operation,
an AC probe has no internal
thread to accept a prong

ŸAn M1 Probe has a telltale

shear pin where an M probe
has not.

Running Tools

ŸC1 – used to run W, Z, G,R and S

locks, can be used to run FB & RB
standing valves

Schlumberger Private
ŸE Selective – used to run S selective
locks with all the dogs retracted

ŸG Selective – used to run S selective

locks with up facing dogs trailing

ŸC1 can be used to run the S

selective lock with the up facing dogs
trailing

Running Tools

ŸBaker M pulling tool used to run and pull

several locks

ŸE, M (locks) and B (safety valve) locks can

Schlumberger Private
be run using the M pulling tool

ŸWith this tool the probe is also used to set

the device

ŸE.g. when an M1 probe is used to set

devices, the probe has a shear pin to
indicate correct setting

Baker Soft Set running tool

ŸImage shows RZB

ŸSoft set tool allows for setting without jarring

Schlumberger Private
as no pins are sheared

ŸPrevents jarring forces damaging the gauges

or disturbing the recording device

ŸNOTE – no packings are fitted to device

Baker FWG

ŸW lock and G equalizing device

ŸPlug – hold pressure from above and below

Schlumberger Private
ŸProng run with plug body – 1 run to set

ŸCollet and collet bowl prevent prong moving down

ŸShear pin (brass) prevents the prong moving up

ŸRun on C1 – 1 x Aluminum (prong) 2 x Brass (body)

ŸBrass pins through body have 2 options

N

W
SW

S SE
CR – slide 15
Baker FWG – setting/pulling

ŸDepends on C1 pinning, best to pin allowing for

over-pull, pins below fishing neck

Schlumberger Private
ŸRIH – set down in nipple, jar down to land on nogo,
dogs lock into profile, over pull to confirm

ŸJar up to shear Brass pins below FN on body, C1

moves up pulling prong to sealing position, then
aluminum pin through prong shears

ŸProng lock in sealing position by collet and collet

bowl

Baker FWG – setting/pulling

ŸTo pull device, pull prong using SB/JDC to equalize,

B probe must be attached to SB/JDC to pull plug
body, B probe collapses the dogs when engaging FN

Schlumberger Private
ŸW2 lock has different dogs, different pivot position

ŸSmaller sized G equalizing assemblies have two

pins through the collet bowl sleeve

ŸSB or JDC must be used to pull device as skirt may

contact body preventing shearing off

Baker RZG

ŸBottom nogo option for R nipples

ŸSame function as FWG

Schlumberger Private
ŸSame running/pulling procedures as FWG

ŸBecause of FN angle and pulling tool OD difference

Otis pulling tool should be used

ŸEnsure equalization before latching lock

ŸPlug does not have a nogo shoulder

ŸCan be run using either a C1, G selective or E

Schlumberger Private
selective running tools

ŸShank holds dogs in running position, prong holds

melon in equalizing position

ŸWhen pulling device, Kobe plug on equalizing body

is broken to allow pressure equalization

Baker FSR setting/pulling

ŸRun using an A shank and pulled using an AC probe

with an equalizing prong attached

Schlumberger Private
ŸC1 with a locator ring to find the F nipple nogo
shoulder

ŸG selective tool holds the down facing dogs

retracted

ŸUpon location of nipple pick up, up facing dogs

locate the profile, half jar up shears C1 pins and
releases down facing dogs locking device in nipple

Baker FSR setting/pulling

ŸTo pull the device, an A or AC probe must be used

attached to the pulling tool

Schlumberger Private
ŸThe probe releases the up facing dogs

ŸAfter equalization, jar up or over pull to release the

device

ŸE – selective tool holds all dogs retracted, allows for

passing of same sized F nipples, pins on running tool
shear to release the upper dogs and setting is as per
on previous tools

Baker Surset equipment

ŸStandard equipment did not meet pressure rating needs of

the industry

ŸNew system needed hence Surset was developed

Schlumberger Private
ŸNew nipples developed that included pressure ratings

ŸRetain F and R nogo positioning

ŸA < 10K, H 10-15K and V > 15K

ŸNew nipples became AF, HF, VF, AR, HR and VR

S SE
CR – slide 24
Baker Surset equipment

ŸLocks made to match nipples hence AF went into an

AF nipple, of VR lock matched a VR nipple

Schlumberger Private
ŸOnly two equalizing devices use H – prong and M –
melon (sometimes known as R)

ŸOne running tool (model A) to run all locks

ŸCan be pulled with Baker M (Otis GS)
