Main Terminal Roof Drainage Design Assessment

1. Introduction
This report has been prepared to present calculation determining the installed roof
drainage system capacity for the Main Terminal Roof.
The calculations are based on the information provided on drawing C4710-96-A1-A-
004002 Roof As-built Sketch (Gutter and Outlets) included in appendix A.

2. Design Criteria
The design criteria for the gutter size and rainwater pipe sizing are following the British standard (BS EN
12056:3-2000). However, the rainfall intensity and durations are taken as per KIO assessment report
fort the same.

The procedures of the gutter size check are as follows extracted from Logic diagram 4 — Eaves
gutters BS EN 12056-3:2000 Standard as attached per Appendix-B:

- Using the design flow for rainwater calculated by KIO report

- Use the Actual gutter size 520mm x 60mm as an assumption to verify if these dimensions are
sufficient for the design flow.

- If the Actual capacity of the gutter is more than the Design flow then the gutter dimensions
are sufficient to carry the rainwater flow, otherwise the dimensions shall be increased
- Calculate outlet head and compare it with free discharge depth to confirm outlet sizes

(Calculations are referred to BS EN 12056-3:2000 Standard) and ASHGHAL Standards

3. Storm runoff calculation summary as per KIO report.

Rational method has been used for checking the capacity of the roof drainage
system.
Q = CIA / 3600
Where:
Q - runoff from the catchment area [l/s]
C - Coefficient based on retention characteristics of the surface under
consideration (for roof areas C =0.95)
I – Rainfall Intensity [mm/h] (Selected for this check I=55.2mm/h for 33 min time
of concentration)

A – Drainage area in sq.m- as per KIO report

The below summary is for a 100 years storm event and rainfall intensity I=55.2mm/h
Catchment area A – Q = 4.05 l/sec
Catchment area B – Q = 5.51 l/sec
Catchment area C – Q = 4.65 l/sec
Catchment area D – Q = 4.68 l/sec
Catchment area E – Q = 1.65 l/sec
Catchment area F – Q = 1.18 l/sec
Catchment area G – Q = 0.79 l/sec
Catchment area H – Q = 2.46 l/sec
Catchment area I – Q = 2.96 l/sec
Catchment area J – Q = 1.02 l/sec

1. Capacity of the Box Gutter.

As per EN 12056-3:2000” article 5.1.4- For eaves gutters of rectangular, trapezoidal and similar
shapes (see Figure 4), designed as level and with outlets capable of allowing free discharge, the
capacity shall be calculated from equation (4):

QL = 0.9 X QN (4)

Where:
QL is the design capacity of "short" gutter, see 5.1.6, laid level, in liters per second (l/s);
0.9 is the factor of safety, dimensionless;
QN is the nominal capacity of the gutter, calculated as QSE X Fd X Fs in liters per second (l/s)
-5 1.25
QSE is the capacity of an equivalent square eaves gutter, calculated as 3.48 x 10 x AE , in
liters per second (l/s);
AE is the full cross-sectional area of gutter, in square millimeters (mm²);
Fd is the depth factor, determined from Figure 5, dimensionless;
Fs is the shape factor, determined from Figure 6, dimensionless.

Based on drawing C4710-96-A1-A- 004002 “Roof As-built Sketch” (Gutter and Outlets) included
in appendix A, the box gutter size used for the check is 520mm x 60mm.

NOTE:
Figure 4 “Ref: EN 12056-3:2000” illustrates the shapes and dimensions of gutters.

Where:
S – Sole width of the gutter = 520mm
L – Gutter Length = 35m
W – Gutter depth = 60mm
T – Water Depth = 520mm
W/T-60/520= 0.115
S/T= 520/ 520= 1

Figure 4 — Dimensions for use with Figures 5, 6, 7 and 10 (EN 12056-3:2000)

2. Flow capacity of Gutter serving area B

Design flow in gutter length = (Q) = 5.51 L/s

No. of outlets =2 each D= 100mm
a. Nominal flow Capacity for Eaves gutter of rectangular, trapezoidal shape

-5 1.25
Qn = 3.48 * 10 * FD * Fs * AE
(Refer to BS EN 12056-3:2000, Equation 4)

Where:
-AE is the cross-sectional area of gutter = 31,200 mm 2 (Refer to Figure 4)
Hamad International Airport
Main Terminal Roof Drainage Design Assessment

-FD is the depth factor = 0.6 (Refer to Figure 5)

0.115

-Fs is the shape factor = 1.00 (Refer to Figure 6)

Hamad International Airport
Main Terminal Roof Drainage Design Assessment

-5 1.25
So, Nominal flow Capacity Qn = 3.48 * 10 * FD * Fs * AE
-5 1.25
= 3.48 * 10 * 0.6 * 1 * 31200
= 8.6 L/s
b. Actual Gutter Capacity for Eaves gutter (not short)

Qc = 0.9 * FL * Qn
Where:
Fl is the capacity factor (Refer table 1)

Length of gutter L= 35000 mm

Depth of gutter W= 520 mm
L/W = 67.31
Capacity factor FL = 1.00

Table 1. Capacity Factor for Long gutters (Refer to BS EN 12056-3:2000, table 6)

Hamad International Airport
Main Terminal Roof Drainage Design Assessment

So, the actual flow Capacity (Qc) = 7.74 L/s

Result:
The Actual flow capacity Qc > Q (7.7 L/s > 5.51 L/s) Then, The gutter dimensions (520mm X 60mm X
35m) are suitable for design flow.
3. Gutter Outlet size
For each outlet there is Qo= 2.71 L/s.
As per BS EN 12056-3:2000 (Table7), free discharge head h= Fh X W,

Where:
Fh Head factor, from figure 10 & W= Gutter depth.
Hamad International Airport
Main Terminal Roof Drainage Design Assessment

So, At S/T = 1.
Fh = 0.47 (figure 10)
h = 0.47 X 60 = 28.2mm

0.47

D
Using Table 7, At h=¿ , circular outlet, Weir flow will be used
2
Ko X D X h1.5
Qo=
7500
1 X 100 X 28.21.5
Then Qo= = 1.99 L/s < 2.71 L/s
7500
So, outlet head is not safe & Service BOX to be provided

4. Gutter service BOX

With reference to BS EN 12056-3:2000 (Figure 12 ),
Lw X h 1.5
Q w=
24000
Where:
LW = length of weir, mm;
h = head over weir, mm;
QW = flow rate over weir, l/s
Hamad International Airport
Main Terminal Roof Drainage Design Assessment

Using the Qw= 5.51 L/s & h= 28.2mm

Then
5.51 X 24000
Lw=
28.21.5
Lw = 883.1 mm Say 900mm
BOX dimension is 520 X900

BOX depth = 35mm+25mm= 60mm
