Critical Reflection

What parts of the lesson did the students seem most engaged?

The students were the most engaged during the group Math Talk on the carpet. We all sat on the carpet and
discussed the different solid figures. The students were excited to try and guess the mystery shape that I was
describing.

With what parts of the lesson did students seem least engaged with?

Working on the packet. The students who struggle with Math kept the class behind, so they were not as
engaged.

List and describe all the active learning strategies you used during your lesson.

- Turn and Talk

- Thumbs up Thumbs down
- Quick draw/write

Preparation and research: How were you prepared to actively engage all learners? What could you have done
differently?

I had partner talks planned into my lesson so students could discuss before being called on and share with the
group. I also had thumbs up thumbs down planned in so that students can verify their learning/understanding
before moving on.

Written plan: Identify the sections of your lesson plan that included active learning strategies (use department
lesson plan categories)

Anticipatory Set
Guided Lesson Activity
Assessment
Presentation: How well do you think you engaged each and every student during your lesson?

Once we broke into centers, the students of each level were supported. I feel that every student was given the
opportunity to show their understanding of the topic while also being supported to help work through what
they didn’t understand.

Assessment: Describe how the strategies allowed you to assess student learning?
I used a lot of informal assessment strategies to assess how the students were feeling about the topic. Thumbs
up thumbs down, quick draw/write, and turn and talk. I met with different groups and assessed their
understanding based on what they were talking about.
