Tutorial
5-1. Load Balancing
A self-contained study file (.sxst) to use with this tutorial is
provided. The explanations below are based on the use of that file.

The Load Balancing Function of CYMDIST will re-phase conductors or re-connect loads according to a user-defined
objective of either minimize the KW losses, balance the load kVA or balance the Current.

n Feeder Load Unbalance Factor

1. Open the self-contained study Tutorial Part 5-1 -

.sxst, or load the feeder GA02 from any of the
tutorial databases.
2. Run a voltage drop analysis on the network to
determine the load unbalance in the feeder. To do
so, select the Voltage Drop analysis in the drop-
down menu list and click the Run Simulation button
to start the calculations.

3. Click on the Show Abnormal Conditions button.

The one-line diagram color will change to indicate

that there are low voltage problems on almost the
entire feeder.
4. Select section 6189 and open the Voltage Drop
results box (CTRL-V). You can notice a large
current unbalance between the Phase A and B (or
C) of the source node section 6189.
5. Go to Report > On Calculation menu option and
open the “Voltage Drop – summary” report. From the
report, it can be seen that the kW losses is 153.84,
and it also indicates 833 sections with low-voltage
conditions, and 2 sections with overload condition.

o Load Balancing Analysis

1. Select the Load Balancing Analysis option in the drop-down menu list in the Simulation toolbar and
select feeder GA02.

2. Three objective functions are available

which are to minimize the KW Losses or
Balance the Load KVA or Balance the
Current.
3. Select the Balance Current Objective.
Include all possible overhead line
sections while ignoring any
underground cables, in other words the
line sections which are to be considered
in the analysis.
• Set the Minimum unbalance
Current for a tap change to 1 A.
• Minimum unbalanced factor
(difference in phase current)
desired is set to within 2 %.

4. Click on the Run button to start the load balancing simulation. The analysis may take up to two
minutes.

5. The program will then identify all

possible re-phasing of conductors that
can be implemented on the feeder and
display the results on the screen. Each
re-phasing step recommended includes
specific information as to which
phase(s) is (are) involved, the Load
transferred and the Total losses
before and after the re-phasing
operation.
6. Select all the recommended re-phasing
steps and Apply them to the feeder.
Click on Save to exit the Load
Balancing results dialog box.
7. Run a voltage drop analysis on the
network.
8. Click on the Show Abnormal Conditions button. The
one-line diagram will show that there are no low voltage
problems on any section of the feeder.
9. Select section 6189 and open the Voltage Drop results
box. You will see that the current unbalance factor is
almost reduced to 0 % at the source node section 6189.
10. Access the “Voltage Drop – summary” report again. It
can be seen that the losses has dropped to 66.37kW.
The Abnormal Conditions table also show no more
sections with a voltage problem.
