ABSTRACT

This study determined the relationship between the administrative

practices of school principals and the teachers’ teaching competence in West

Maasim District of Sarangani Province. The respondents of this study were the

total population of teachers of the five elementary schools namely: Maasim

Central Elementary School, Hilltop Elementary School, Daliao Elementary

School. Kanalo Elementary School and Pananag Elementary School. These

teachers evaluated the administrative practices of the school principals. It was

found that the school principals often have a good relationship with teachers, in

hiring of applicants, in attending the teachers with problems and often conduct

class observations. Another group of respondents were the 125 Grade 6 learners

of which 25 learners were taken from each of the five elementary schools who

evaluated the teachers’ teaching competence. It was found that, teachers are

generally competent in their classroom management, in their instructional

strategies and the giving of examinations. However, the teachers are only

moderately competent in the use the use of technology. It is highly recommended

that the teachers undergo trainings on the use of computers and internet. School

principals should maintain fairness and objectivity in the hiring of teacher-

applicants to achieve the quality of instruction and they should regularly conduct

classroom observations to ensure that the teachers create a learning

environment conducive to learning.
