1.0 PURPOSE
1.1 The purpose of this work instruction is to ensure that standard practices /
methods of Calibration are followed to obtain reproducible and comparable
results and this document shall be revised as and when required to meet
specific requirements of the project to become a project specific work
instruction.

2.0 SCOPE
2.1 This work instruction is applicable for Calibration Laboratory to carryout
calibration of Adhesion tester at Lab. temperature as per applicable
international standards/methods.

3.0 REFERENCE
3.1 Documents used: Instrument Manual
3.2 Adhesion Verification Unit

4.0 DEFINITIONS
4.1 AVU: Adhesion Verification Unit
4.2 UUT: Unit Under Test

5.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
5.1 All the Operators/Technicians perfoming the Calibration shall be trained

6.0 CALIBRATION CONDITIONS

6.1 Lab. Temperature : (21 ± 2) °C
6.2 Relative Humidity : (50 ± 15) % RH

7.0 GENERAL GUIDELINES

7.1 The calibration should be performed in the controlled environment only. Both
the UUT and Reference Standard equipment should be placed in controlled
environmental condition as mentioned above for at least 30 min warm up.
7.2 UUT should be inspected visually before starting the calibration. Visual
inspection is done for:

 Any physical damage in the unit.

 Proper Display
 Proper functioning of push buttons
7.3 If it is not satisfactory, it is to be recorded in the Data Sheet.

8.0 CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

8.1 Press and hold the “On/Off” key to switch on the elcometer AVU.
8.2 Fit the appropriate dolly adaptor - screwing clockwise to tighten into position.
8.3 The reading on the elcometer AVU display should be zero.
 Note: Do not overtighten as this will apply pressure and result in
inaccurate readings.
8.4 Connect the adhesion gauge or actuator to the dolly adaptor as shown.

8.5 “MAX” should be displayed on the Elcometer AVU LCD to indicate that ‘Max
Hold’ is switched on.
8.6 ‘Max Hold’ holds the elcometer AVU reading when the required test pressure
has been reached on the adhesion gauge.

8.7 Press the “MAX” softkey to switch ‘Max Hold’ on and off.
 Note: The display will hold the maximum value until the ‘MAX’ softkey
is pressed again.
8.8 Adhesion gauges should be tested at several pressure / adhesion values
across their measurement range see the table below for recommended test
pressures for pull-off adhesion gauges for 20 mm dolly.

Analog Gauges Digital Gauges

Mpa psi Mpa psi
3 500 2 500
8 1000 5 1000
13 1500 10 1500
18 2000 15 2000
23 2500 20 2500
25 3000 25 3000
8.9 When comparing the adhesion gauge reading with the Elcometer AVU
reading, the user should refer to the adhesion gauge’s accuracy statement.
8.10 This is usually quoted in the operating instructions or technical data sheet.
8.11 The adhesion gauge can be stated as performing within specification if the
Elcometer AVU adhesion reading is within the stated accuracy of the
adhesion gauge.
8.12 Release all pressure from the adhesion gauge.
8.13 Detach the adhesion gauge or actuator from the dolly adaptor.
8.14 Press the “MAX” softkey to release the ‘Max Hold’.
8.15 Record the Reading taken on Data Sheet.
8.16 Compare the maximum error found with the instrument accuracy as per
manufacturer’s specification and the accuracy statement is made accordingly
in the calibration certificate.
