CHAPTER III:

ANALYSIS &
PRESENTATION OF DATA
3.1 Objective 1

To identify the possible injuries in husking the coconut using the traditional husking tool.

The traditional method of dehusking coconut involves splitting of of the harvested fruit into two
or three parts using matchet without removing the husk. This method is very simple but concentrates only
on the coconut meat thereby wasting other coconut by- products such as water/milk, shell and husk.

However, this method poses a threat on human life as people cut their fingers or hand during
the operation when the blade of the machete hit them or their face when the machete bounces into it.
The manual dehusking process also involves such fatigue to the user. They may also develop
musculoskeletal disorders in different parts of their body such as back pain because of their awkward
body position for an extended time while husking the coconut and shoulder injury due to repetitive
actions of hitting the coconut using a machete.

3.2 Objective 2

To determine the appropriate anthropemetric data needed for the measurement of the dimensions of the
Ergonomic Coconut Husking Tool.

The researchers took the anthropometry data of the ten (10) samples to determine the approroate
measurement needed for the fabrication of the ergonomic coconut husking tool. The following body
dimensions’ measurement are to be taken from the samples:

• Stature – the vertical distance from the floor to the vertex.

This dimension is to be used in determining the approriate height for the designed Ergonomic
Coconut Husking Tool so that it will not exceed nor fall short of for the user.

• Knee height – vertical distance from the floor to the upper surface of the knee (usually measured
to the quadriceps muscle rather than the kneecap).

This is measured so that the legs of the user will not hang without floor support and will not cause
pain in the legs.
• Sitting height – vertical distance from the sitting surface to the vertex.

This will be used to determine the height of the Ergonomic Coconut Husking Tool when the user
is in the sitting position.

• Upper limb length – this dimension is pertinent to evaluating reach conditions within the design
situation. This dimension should be used in conjunction with leg-reach dimensions when the design
situation calls for a seated operator to operate both hand and foot controls.

This anthropometric data will be used to determine the easiest on how the user may reach the
husking tool.

3.3 Objective 3

To compare the Ergonomic Coconut Husking Tool with traditional coconut husking tools.

This husking tool the researchers developed can lessen the possibilities of injuries in coconut
husking process compare to the old husking tool. The design of the husking tool that the researchers
developed is easy to use and more ergonomic instead of holding the coconut and put it on sharp edge of
tool to peel the coconut and you have to bend your body to make the task of dehusking the coconut and
you have to do process repetitive. This process may cause MSDs to the user compare to the husking tool
the researchers developed. In this tool, you may lessen the repetitive of bending your body that is causing
back pain. Using this husking tool may reduce of having wound by accidentally touching the sharp edge
of the other husking tool and in this tool, you don’t have to exert more effort to peel the coconut. This tool
can help the farmers to their job to lessen their effort for husking a coconut. It also helps to reduce body
pain by bending our body with the old husking tool, the table of husking tool is adjustable so the user can
adjust it in any position he/she wants.
3.4 Objective 4

To point out the different applications of the Ergonomic Coconut Husking Tool.

1. Coconut Oil Industries:

The coconut oil industries occupied a large space in industrial area. The requirement of coconut
oil has increased vastly in recent years.

To get the oil from the coconut it is required to make some operations on coconut such as,
removing the husk and de-shelling the coconut. These operations were carried out manually like using
itak or bolo for conducting those operations. These processes have more limitations. But the coconut de-
husking machine has a strong impact in the coconut oil industries. The automated coconut de-husking
machine can make revolutionary and productive changes in coconut oil industries.

2. Coconut Farming:

Agriculture forms the backbone of our country economy. About 50-60% of citizens are
depending on agriculture. For developing our country means providing our farmers with more advanced
technology or tools, which would reduce overall time and cost required for work. This would make the
work easier and more comfortable.
