What I have learned in SOCIOLOGY

How sociology relates to our course? Why we need to study

sociology? As the end of this semester, it’s time for me to shift what
I had learned in my subject. For the past months we had this subject,
it is not an excuse if we say we have not learned and absorbed
something in our class.

In our daily activities, we encounter so many different people in

different situations and places. As we encounter, we need to interact
and communicate to them to become a socialize one. As an economic
student, we are concerned with the distribution of the scarce
resources to satisfy the infinite material need of an individual.
Thus, sociology deals deeply to the basic with human relationship
within the social systems and economics look deeply to the basic
process needed in meeting the material needs of people within the
social system. So, we the economics students must take this subject
for it still relate to our course.

What is sociology? For me, sociology is the study of the enter-

action between the people in the social system. Sociology came from
the Greek words “socious” which means companion and “logos” which
means study. Our professor introduces and discusses to us the first
topic which deals with the sociological foundations and research
method. These social research methods will help the sociologists to
understand the social issues and to find a way to solve the problems
involving in the society. A number of theories have been formulated in
the study of society. This includes the structural-functionalism,
conflict theory and symbolic interactionism.

As far as I remember, the reporters introduce to us the topic

which is the group and organization. We all know that sociology study
the group behavior and their social relationship. There were types of
groups namely the primary group and secondary group. Primary groups
are groups that have an intimate relationship like family, peer groups
and etc. while in secondary group are larger groups which the member
do not directly interact with each other.

In sociology, we tackle about the culture and Philippine values.

Culture is the way of life common to a group of people which enable
them to share ideas and patterns of behavior that distinguishes them
from the others. For me, culture is what makes us Filipinos different
from the other countries. It is the culture that identifies us as a
Filipinos. Some of our values were adopted from the colonizers. Values
are the concepts of what is important or these are the basis of our
judgment, of what we consider good, desirable, and correct, as well as
what is considered bad, undesirable, and wrong.

Socialization is a continuous and a lifelong process which begins

at birth and end at deaths. The family is the most influential group
in the child’s life. The parents play an important role in developing
the personality, behavior and attitudes of a child as well as their
skills and abilities to how they interact with the other people. The
socialization of a child takes place in peer groups, in the school and
etc. as the child’s grow older. Deviance behavior is happen when
something goes wrong. Deviance is the violating the most highly valued
norms in the society.

In our class, we are not only listened to our professor but we

also learned how to socialize and mingle to our classmates. We enable
to interact with each other even though we have different culture and
different courses. There are a lot of issues we had read in the book
of our sociology. Some of these are those youth that are engaging in a
risky behavior for some reasons. As part of the social change, because
of poverty some of our youth were victims of the child slavery and
some of them engaged to sexual abuses in order to survive.

This subject enable us look and face the reality of the issues we
had in our society. I had learned in this subject. There’s a lot of
new words and information I had encounter. As the end of my essay, I
would like to say thank you to our professor who bring us to different
world, issues and etc.
