3 PIPING SPECIFICATION CODE

The piping specification code usually consists of:

• One letter for the pressure stages
• One letter for the material
• One series number (usually one digit)

The nominal pressure refers to the (temperature- dependent) class of the piping parts applied in the
system concerned. Each type of material has its own curve for the pressure-temperature dependency,

4 GENERAL PIPING PRACTICES

4.1 Pipe
1. The design of piping systems shall comply with the requirements of ASME B31.3.
2. All underground piping shall be externally protected in accordance with ASME B31.4-2002 para.
461.
3. Nominal pipe sizes shall be specified in inches and wall thicknesses shall be in accordance with
ASME B36.10 or B36.19
4. All piping component’s wall thicknesses specified in the Piping Material Class are calculated in
accordance with ASME B31.3 and are based on the internal design pressure, design temperature,
corrosion allowance and the Manufacturer’s minus tolerance.
5. Coating and Galvanizing shall be in accordance with ASTM A123

4.2 Valve
1. Face to face or end to end dimensions of valve shall conform to ASME B16.10 to the extent
covered. For valve not covered in ASME B16.10 reference shall be made to the respective valve
design standard or the manufacturer standard
2. Flange dimensions of Carbon steel and Stainless steel valves shall conform to the respective flange
standard specified in the piping material class
3. 2” and larger steel gate, globe and check valves for utility service shall have bolted bonnets
4. All flanged valves shall have flanges integral with the valve body, however forged valves can have
weld on flanges
5. Valves which come under ASME B16.34 shall meet the requirements of API 600, except for the
body wall thickness
6. For non-high-temperature lines, SW-NPT type valves may be used as drain/vent valves and the
first block valves of compound gage (CG), pressure gage (PG)/pressure transmitter (PT) and orifice
tap valves

4.3 Fitting

1. Fitting up to 1-1/2 in diameter

• Ends
The fittings used for piping up to 1-1/2 in diameter shall be made of the “socket welding” type.
The threading shall be NPT as per ASME standard B1.20.1
• Elbows
Up to 1-1/2 in diameter, bending shall be preferred to elbows, the bending radius shall be equal
to five times the nominal diameter of the tube

• Tee
Equal and unequal tees shall be used

2. Fitting 2” or more in diameter

• Ends
The fittings used for piping 2” or more in diameter shall be made of the butt-welding type
• Elbows
Elbow shall have large radius (R=1.5d)
If bends must be used for these diameters, they shall be cold-fabricated for the diameters 2”
and 3” and hot-fabricated for diameters 4” or more. The bending radius shall be equal to five
times the nominal diameter of the tube.
• Tees
Equal tees may be used for all connections to piping of the same diameter. The limits within
which they may be used shall be specified in the piping material class.
3. Exception of galvanized systems which shall be joined together only by threaded connections,
unless otherwise specified in piping material class.
4. Pipe, valves, and fittings in nominal size 1-1/4”, 2-1/2” and 5” shall not be used, except as noted on
P & ID. Where equipment is normally applied by the manufacturer with connections in any of above
sizes, connections will be made with suitable swages or reducers to pipe of approved size
5. Wall schedules of weld O-lets shall be the same as branch wall schedules.

4.4 Flange
1. Flange face finish

• The gasket contact shall be formed by a serrated continuous spiral groove, generated by a 0.8
mm radius round-nosed tool at a feed rate between 0.3 mm and 0.45 mm per revolution. This will
result in a roughness between Ra 125 µin and Ra 250 µin.

• Inspection of the flange face shall be performed by Manufacturer’s inspection.

2. Flanged joints shall be installed so that accurate matching of bolt holes and uniform contact over
the entire flange face area can be obtained prior to installing flange bolts. Flange faces shall be
aligned to the design plane to within 1.5 mm per foot maximum measured across any diameter, and
flange bolt holes shall be aligned to within 1.5 mm maximum offset. Any damage to contact face
which would prevent\ proper seating of the gasket shall be repaired or the flanges shall be
replaced.
3. When shop installed, bolts shall be installed with an initial compression suitable to "seat" the gasket
against the flange face. The initial bolt tension required to set the gasket in place shall be dictated
by the flange facing and gasket material involved. Bolts shall be cleaned, free from rust and
lubricated

4.5 Bolting

Machine and stud bolt length shall be calculated in accordance with ASME B16.5. Where spectacle
blinds, etc. are installed, the bolt length shall be increased by the thickness of such devices and extra
gasket

4.6 Gasket

1. Gaskets and packing shall be made of NON-ASBESTOS material.

2. Compressed type gaskets shall conform to the standards ASME B16.21
3. Non-metallic ring gaskets as per ASME B16.21 shall match flanges to ASME B16.5
4. Spiral wound gaskets and metallic gaskets as per B16.20/API-601 shall match flanges to ASME
B16.5

4.7 Materials

1. All materials shall be in accordance with the Carbon Steel Piping Material Class Specifications.
Materials shall not be substituted in regard to Class, Grade, or Type unless such substitution is
submitted to the Contracting Authority for approval and written permission given. Defective
materials, including surface defects, shall be replaced.
2. Galvanised piping in below 2” should be constructed from pre-galvanised screwed pipe and fittings
according to piping class.
3. Galvanised piping in above or same 2” should be made from pre-fabricated pipe spools according
to piping material class. These spools shall be flanged and shall be restricted to shapes that permit
hot dip galvanising after fabrication. Field welds may be applied if mention in piping material class
for galvanised pipe.
