REVISED RESEARCH DESIGN AND INSTRUMENTS

|Facundo, Ardiane Redj B.| Manuel, Mary Moira Kaye I.| Vargas, Adrian Jeremiah C.|

Research Design

This study is an ethnographic-inductive logic study that is a normative political theory oriented
research. This paper classifies itself as a normative research.

This research paper applies an idiographic and nomothetic approach. An idiographic approach is
designed to obtain information about specific cases, meaning, the result is confined to a defined
setting and time. An idiographic approach employs direct and documentary data sources like
case studies of country nation brands of states who have established nation brands. To achieve
this, collection of data will be done to analyze the nation brands of other states in order to
generate insights for developing the Philippine nation brand.

Also, this study would also employ a nomothetic approach in which the study would investigate
on large groups of people in order to find general laws of behaviour that apply to everyone.
Usually, this would entail using quantitative and/or typological methods such as key informant
interview (KII). To achieve this, the researchers would interview on certain institutions to
attempt to satiate the specific as well as general objectives.

Research Instruments

The research instruments that will be used in the study are mainly qualitative through gathering
data from interviews and document analysis.

Second, the use of interviews to elites, or a well-informed person of a particular institution or

organization, as tool will be both phenomenological and ethnographic. Phenomenological
interviews employ descriptive, structural and contrast. In this type of interviews, the researchers
will be able to ask representatives from institutions on the substance (descriptive), strategy
(structural) and symbolic actions (contrast) pertaining to nation brand and its determinants. On
the other hand, ethnographic interviews will be used to gather information on the interviewee’s
description on the meaning of nation branding.

Lastly, this study will be employing document analysis from documents and public records. This
is especially applicable to identifying the efforts undertaken by the selected states and their
considerations of the key factors and actors. With the analyses from these existing studies and
accounts of people, the researchers will be able to gather data and interpret it to determine the
potentials of the Philippines to develop the Philippine nation brand.
