1. Gluteus Maximus - is the large, wide, thick muscle at the surface of the
buttocks. It originates at the ilium (the crest of the pelvic girdle, or hipbone) and
at portions of the sacrum and coccyx, bones at the base of the spine.
2. Greater Trochanter of Femur - is a large, irregular, quadrilateral eminence
and a part of the skeletal system. It is directed lateral and medially and slightly
posterior. In the adult it is about 1 cm lower than the head.
3. Adductor Magnus - large triangular muscle, situated on the medial side of
the thigh.
4. Semitendinosus - long superficial muscle in the back of the thigh. It is so
named because it has a very long tendon of insertion. It lies posteromedially in
the thigh, superficial to the semimembranosus.
5. Biceps Femoris – muscle of the thigh located to the posterior, or back. As its
name implies, it has two parts, one of which (the long head) forms part of the
hamstrings muscle group.
6. Popliteus Fossa – (sometimes referred to as the hough, or kneepit in
analogy to the armpit) is a shallow depression located at the back of the knee
joint. The bones of the popliteal fossa are the femur and the tibia.
7. Gracilis – (also gracilis muscle, latin: musculus gracilis) is a long, slim,
superficial muscle of the medial region of the thigh. The latin gword gracilis
means "slender".
8. Semimembranosus – (also semimembranosus muscle, latin: musculus
semimembranosus) is a flat, long muscle situated in the posterior region of the
thigh. The semimembranosus is so called because of its membranous tendon of
origin.
9. Popliteus – muscle of the leg. Its deepest muscle of the knee joint which
forms the floor of the popliteus fossa. It is the only muscle in the posterior (back)
compartment of the lower leg that acts just on the knee and not on the ankle. Its
a thin, flat ,triangular shape muscle.
10. Gastrocnemius – muscle (plural gastrocnemii) is a superficial two-headed
muscle that is in the back part of the lower leg of humans. It runs from its two
heads just above the knee to the heel, a three joint muscle (knee, ankle and
subtalar joints).
