Introduction:

Coffea plant is a genus of flowering plants in the family

Rubiaceae. Coffea species are shrubs or small trees native to tropical

and southern Africa and tropical Asia. The seeds of some species,

called coffee beans, are used to flavor various beverages and

products. Coffee beans are harvested from the trees grown in Africa,

Asia, Indonesia and Latin America. They grow at a range of elevations

from near sea level (for example, on the island of Hawaii) to high in

the Andres of Colombia and Peru in South Africa. Coffea grows in rainy

and dry seasons. It will take approximately 3 to 4 years for the newly

planted coffee trees to bear fruit. Coffee beans help to tighten

skin and also reduce the appearance of dimply cellulite. According to

HealthLine, coffee possess benefits to our skin like calming effects,

anti-aging benefits, vitamin b-3 for skin cancer, reduced

inflammation, acne treatment, dark circles and for exfoliation. Coffee

grounds are grinded coffee beans. It is also useful in different ways

like for fertilizing your garden, compost it for later, repel insects

and pests, remove fleas from your pet, neutralize odors, scour your

pots and pans, and most importantly exfoliating your skin. Exfoliation

involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells on the skin's outermost

surface. Coffee grounds make a great exfoliant. The grounds do not

dissolve in water, which makes them good at scrubbing away

dead skin cells. Coarse particles are what makes coffee grounds as a

skin exfoliant. According to Alowishus, the coarse particles in coffee

grounds work as an exfoliating agent to help remove dirt and dead

cells from the skin. It helps to remove the dry and flaky skin because

exfoliation plays that role at skin. Coarse particles are the

relatively large airborne particles mainly produced by the mechanical

break-up of even larger solid particles. The coarse particles are not a

certain nutrients but the caffeic acid assists it as an anti-oxidant

and boost collagen levels and reduce the premature aging of cells.

Chapter I

Background of the Study:

The history of coffee dates back to the 15th century, and possibly

earlier with a number of reports and legends surrounding its first

use. The native (undomesticated) origin of Coffee bean is

from Ethiopia. The earliest substantiated evidence of either coffee

drinking or knowledge of the coffee tree is from the early 15th

century, in the Sufi monasteries of Yemen,[1] spreading soon to Mecca

and Cairo. By the 16th century, it had reached the rest of the Middle

East, South India (Karnataka), Persia, Turkey, the Horn of Africa,

and northern Africa. Coffee then spread to the Balkans, Italy, and to

the rest of Europe, as well as Southeast Asia and then to America,

[2]
despite bans imposed during the 15th century by religious leaders in

Mecca and Cairo, and later by the Catholic Church.

There are several legendary accounts of the origin of the drink

itself. One account involves the Moroccan Sufi mystic Ghothul Akbar

Nooruddin Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili.[7] When traveling in Ethiopia, the

legend goes, he observed birds of unusual vitality feeding on berries,

and, upon trying the berries, experienced the same vitality. Other

accounts attribute the discovery of coffee to Sheikh Abu al-Hasan ash-

Shadhili's disciple, Omar. According to the ancient chronicle

(preserved in the Abd-Al-Kadir manuscript), Omar, who was known for

his ability to cure the sick through prayer, was once exiled from

Mecca to a desert cave near Ousab. Starving, Omar chewed berries from

nearby shrubbery, but found them to be bitter. He tried roasting the

beans to improve the flavor, but they became hard. He then tried

boiling them to soften the bean, which resulted in a fragrant brown

liquid. Upon drinking the liquid Omar was revitalized and sustained

for days. As stories of this "miracle drug" reached Mecca, Omar was

asked to return and was made a saint.[8]

In the present situation, humans had discovered and still

discovering uses of coffee. In fact, we actually come upon fresh

coffee grounds and used coffee grounds. Our creativity and curiosity

lead us to different uses such as fertilize your garden, compost it

for later, repel insects and pests, treat under-eye circles, grow

mushrooms, repair scratched furniture, stimulate hair growth and strip

buildup, tenderize meat, clean your fireplace, use it as a natural

dye, reduce the appearance of cellulite, exfoliate your skin, scour

your pots and pans, remove fleas from your pet, neutralize odors, and

use it as a natural cleaning scrub. These essential uses benefit us a

lot in our daily lives and problem.

Statement of the Problem:

 Does the fresh ground coffee effective as a body exfoliator?

 Does the fresh ground coffee will ensure the smoothness of the

skin?

 Does the fresh ground coffee helps remove dead skin cells in our

body?

 Does the fresh ground coffee can brighten our skin

 Does fresh ground coffee can lighten sun spots, redness and fine

lines?

Parameters:
Independent Variable: skin condition

Dependent Variable: coffee grounds

Controlled Variable: Amount of the Ingredients

Hypothesis:

Is there a significant effect of fresh ground coffee as an alternative

body scrub on our skin?

Null Hypothesis: There is no significant effect of fresh ground coffee

as an alternative body scrub on our skin

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a significant effect of fresh ground

coffee as an alternative body scrub on our skin

Significance of the Study:

This study will be used to know whether the use of used ground coffee

is effective as a body exfoliator and to know the result of the said

study. The study is conducted to benefit of the following:

Students: This study may be used as a guide to those students who are

conducting the same study

Parents: This study will help parents to think of other remedy to

exfoliate their skin/their child’s skin and for them to know the other

uses of fresh ground coffee

Teachers: This study will help the teachers to know how to exfoliate

their skin and suggest it to co-teachers and students that are skin

conscious

Scope and Limitation:

This study focuses of the effectiveness of the fresh ground

coffee as a body exfoliator. This study is designed to have a further

research about the uses and benefits of ground coffee in skin. The

product will be applied only on skin and prohibits the consumption.

The researchers are the one who will test the effectiveness of the

coffee scrub and observe the outcome.

Definition of Terms:

Coffee: the seed from the coffee tree

Exfoliation: The removal of the dead skin cell on the surface of your

skin

Coarse particles: Grinded/ broke down solid things into smaller and

thin pieces that are air-borne like dust and etc.

Collagen: An important protein in our body. Its purpose is usually for

medical and cosmetics

Exfoliants: The one who exfoliates the skin
