Answer Assignment 1

a) Volume of oil = Area x height of oil

Area = A=π r 2
= л (0.152)
= 0.0707 m2
Height of oil = ¾ (1.5)
= 1.125 m
Thus the volume of oil = 1.125 x 0.0707
= 0.0795 m3
Weight = mass x gravitational constant
Therefore mass = Weight / gravitational constant
= 200 N / 9.81N/kg
= 20.3874 kg
Density ρ = mass / volume
= 20.3874 kg/ 0.0795 m3
= 256 kg/m3
Relative density RD = Density of oil / Density of water
= 256/1000
= 0.256
b) Vapour pressure = ρ g h
= (0.78 x 1000) x 9.81 x 0.2
= 1530 Pa
= 1.53 kPa
Maximum Pressure = Liquid Pressure + Vapour Pressure
Liquid Pressure = ρ g h liquid
= 780 x 9.81 x 0.7
= 5356 Pa
= 5.36 kPa
Maximum Pressure = 5.36 kPa + 1.53 kPa = 6.89 kPa.
Or Maximum Pressure = ρ g h = 780 x 9.81 x 0.9 = 6.89 kPa.
