Unit Startup Procedure

Before stating the unit ensure that

1. No P.T.W is pending on any equipment/system required for running the unit i.e.
turbine, generator, transformer, isolators, circuit breakers etc.
2. Equipments/systems are normalized/lined up from Mechanical and Electrical side
3. Intake gate and draft tube gate are open and Generator brakes dis engaged (off)
Ensure start permissive conditions SP1, SP 2 & SP3 in permissive conditions are
through.

Step 1
 Command “ Oil circulation pump” ON
 Command “ Generator Space heater off”
 Creep detection blocked
 Guide vane fully closed
 Ensure Hydraulic lock disengage

Ensure all the steps mentioned above are normalized

Step 2
 Command “ Raw Cooling water system on”
 Command “ Treated Cooling water system on”

Ensure all the steps mentioned above are normalized. Also ensure Raw and treated CW flow
normal

Step 3
 Runner aeration equipment valve open
 Overhead tank CW valve open
 CW valve for shaft seal open
 Shaft seal hydrostatic pump ON
Ensure CW flow to all the bearings, Generator air cooler & governor PP set is normal. Ensure
that shaft seal CW pressure and flow normal. Also ensure shaft seal hydro static feed flow
normal.

Step 4
 Open Bypass valve of MIV
 Open MIV after pressure on both sides are equalized
 Close Bypass valve of MIV

Ensure MIV fully open and bypass valve fully closed

Step 5

 Release mechanical brakes

Ensure all the mechanical brakes released

Step 6

 Command “ Governor start”

Ensure GCB open, speed > 90 %, field breaker open, MIV fully open, Line charge sel. off
SPIN MODE
Ensure program changeover conditions PC 1 as mentioned above are through

Step 7
 Open Earth switch
 Close Isolator Breaker
 Close field Breaker
 Excitation ON

Ensure the above mentioned conditions and voltage > 90 %

Step 8
 Auto Synchronizer ON
 GCB CLOSED

GENERATION MODE

NB: During the start of Unit and its auxiliaries, local checks/ observations need to be carried out
on each equipment/system for normal running and to find out any abnormality like excessive
vibrations, noise, leakage etc.
