Las Vegas Academy Audition Dates: January 11 and January 25, 2020

All students must complete the application at magnet.ccsd.net prior to January 7, 2020.
Applications entered after deadline are considered late and will be scheduled for the late audition
depending on seat availability. Auditions are open to students entering grades 9, 10 and 11.
Students may audition for just ONE major. Admissions decisions will be made based on that audition.

1. Online application must be completed prior to audition deadline.
2. Wear bright colored dance wear. Hair must be pulled away from face and secured. Bare feet or dance shoes are allowed; no
street shoes or pointe shoes. No gum chewing, no jewelry may be worn, no food or drink - only water permitted in the building.
3. Arrive early (7:00 a.m.) on the day of auditions so there is time to get checked in and stretched on your own. Entrance is on
10th Street between Lewis and Clark.
4. Students will be taught dance combinations in ballet, jazz, and contemporary and asked to perform them. Do not prepare
a dance, everything will be taught at the auditions.
5. Auditions are closed to all parents. You will be given a pickup time when you check-in.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC For more information: Band x4039
Orchestra x4085
1. Brass/Woodwinds: Students will be asked to perform concert G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db scales and a chromatic scale. They
should bring a prepared piece of 2-3 minutes in duration that demonstrates their skills. A short sight-reading exercise will also
be required. Students must provide an original copy of the piece for the evaluators.
2. Percussion: All students will perform the required snare etude. (Download at lasvegasacademy.net). Students will perform
solo selection(s) of their choosing amounting to 3 - 7 minutes total (a mallet etude/solo is preferred). For example, students
can perform a snare solo and a mallet solo in the 7 minute time. Sight-reading will also be required on snare. Students must
provide an original copy of the prepared music selections.
3. Orchestra: Students will be required to play their two best scales, two to three octaves, and play a prepared solo from string
solo literature that demonstrates their ability.
4. Piano: Students will be required to play major scales, two or more octaves, and one memorized solo piece of repertoire from
any stylistic period. Pop music is NOT acceptable. Sight-reading will also be required.
5. Guitar: Play from memory, in first position with a pick, two octave major scales in the keys of E, F and G and one octave major
scales in the keys of C, Bb, D and A. Audition will include sight-reading. All students will perform the same classical piece
demonstrating right-hand finger-picking style.
6. Mariachi: Violin/Guitarron: Students will be required to play two scales of directors choosing. Guitar/Vihuela: Students
will be required to play the C, A, G, E, D chord forms in first position. Trumpet: Students are required to play G,F, and A, two
octaves with arpeggios two octaves. All students are required to play a prepared song from mariachi literature that demonstrates
their ability and a prepared vocal piece in mariachi genre. Sight-reading will also be required.

JAZZ STUDIES For more information: Jazz ext. 4051


1. Brass, Winds, Guitar, Bass, and Piano memorize all TWELVE of the major scales at a TEMPO of quarter note equals 144
beats per minute. Play a chromatic scale at a TEMPO of quarter note equals 120 beats per minute in an 8th note triplet fashion.
2. Brass, Winds, Guitar, and Piano should choose between A or B below:
A. Perform a standard jazz piece and solo over two choruses of changes or use the LVA Optional Jazz Audition.
B. Perform a jazz transcription of a major performer with the head and two choruses of solos.
3. Rhythm Section players will be asked to demonstrate various Latin, Jazz, and Afro-Cuban styles.
4. Drummers will be asked to trade fours and demonstrate a knowledge in brushes.
5. All auditioning students will be asked to sight-read as part of their audition.

1. Bring at least one example of your completed work to the interview. This could include art, sewing, carpentry or craft project that represents
acquired skills or talents. Other works can include in-scale renderings, models, 3-D projects, technology based original designs, and stage
management books.
2. Present your work during the interview. Within this presentation, you must include inspiration notes/images and process photos/work.
Be prepared for questions on your inspiration, process, materials, use, etc. Theatre experience is not required to audition.

1. A 30-second monologue from one of the monologues provided on the LVA webpage.
2. A 1 minute pantomime (no props/set/speaking) focusing on movement using one of the following four prompts: catching a fish, eating something you
think is delicious but is really rotten, opening a gift you received in front of the person giving it - can like or hate, making something from scratch - fence,
dress, cookies, etc.
3. 16 bars from a song of their choice accompanied by either a track on CD or IPOD/phone, or sheet music with the cuttings marked. An accompanist
will be provided.

VISUAL ARTS Audition Requirements & Procedures:
Applicants will bring a portfolio of 7 to 9 artworks of his/her original work to the audition. The four mandatory images and the additional 3 to 5
individual works. This portfolio should represent the student's BEST work. No slides or photocopies of work will be evaluated.
1. Prior to your audition label all portfolio entries with your MAGNET NUMBER & STUDENT NUMBER ON THE BACK OF EACH ARTWORK​.
2. ALL STUDENTS will answer these essay questions prior to audition:
a. Why do you want to attend the Las Vegas Academy? b. Describe two characteristics that make you a unique student.
3. You must select one of the SEVEN VISUAL ARTS MAJORS within the conservatory: Visual Design (Drawing & Painting), Film & Video
Production, Animation, Graphic Design, Digital Illustration (computer art), Ceramics & Sculpture 3D (10th grade pre-requisite of Ceramics
1 & 2), Photography (10th grade pre-requisite with Photo 1 & Photo 2). Your choice will determine your coursework when you begin the four-
year program of study.
PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO REQUESTED MAJOR:
PART #1 Portfolio​for Visual Design, Sculpture, Digital Illustration, Photography, Animation, Graphic Design.
Submission consists of the following mandatory 4 (four) specific artworks using the imagery and media:
1. Still life drawing using charcoal
2. Self-Portrait using graphite pencil: draw yourself by looking into a mirror
3. Contour line drawing of your shoe using ballpoint pen
4. Colored landscape painting using watercolor, acrylic, or oil paint
In addition, 3 to 5 pieces specific to the chosen major audition for:
• VISUAL DESIGN: 3 to 5 drawings and paintings (including 1 sketchbook)
• SCULPTURE: 3 to 5 3D pieces (ex. ceramics, wire, wood, plaster, jewelry, glass)
• PHOTOGRAPHY: 3 to 5 photographs showing the following compositional elements - PATTERN, SYMMETRY, TEXTURE, DEPTH OF FIELD

• DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION: 3 to 5 pieces using any digital software, tablet or device capturing portraits, landscapes, still lifes or imaginary
scenes in own style.
• ANIMATION: 3 to 5 pieces including character designs, expression sheet, turnaround, storyboard, sketchbook of ideas, animated GIF or
short movement sequences in MP4 or MOV format.
• GRAPHIC DESIGN: 3 to 5 pieces demonstrating design projects with type, logo, photographs, layout, products, and/or publication.
PART #2 Skills Demonstration​for Visual Design, Sculpture, Digital Illustration, Photography, Animation, Graphic Design.
• VISUAL DESIGN, PHOTOGRAPHY, SCULPTURE, DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION: Students will draw a still life using graphite for 30
minutes. The still life drawing for these majors will be juried by the following rubric:
◊ Composition: format, arrangement, use of picture plane.
◊ Technique and Use of Media: application of graphite using contour line, value, and shading techniques according to the directional
light source.
◊ Realism and Rendering: accurate placement of objects and use of correct proportion.
• ANIMATION: Students will be given a story with choice of characters as the protagonist. One character must be selected, drawn, drawn
from multiple angles in a turnaround, and then featured in a storyboard based on the story where the ending is open and the student must
decide how it finishes. One hour will be given for this skills demonstration.
• GRAPHIC DESIGN: Students will be given one hour to read a design brief for a company, design a logo in sketches, thumbnails, and color.
The logo is then applied with other requirements to a deliverable in specific format for the client.
Film & Video Production
The applicant will create a presentation for a short film/video. This presentation should include a four to five page script and a storyboard (series
of panel drawings) specifically outlining how the finished product will look upon completion. In addition, you must submit a one-page essay
detailing your specific interest in the LVA Film and Video Production program. All skills demonstrations will provide materials by the department.

VOCAL MUSIC For more information: Vocal ext. 4150 or 4153
1. Vocal Solo: Select a one (1) minute musical theater solo, art song, aria, folk, or foreign art song to show off your vocal strengths. Student must bring
sheet music or accompaniment CD. An accompanist will be provided. Auditionees will not be allowed to "sing-along" with a CD. You will not be
allowed to sing popular, R & B, rap, or Top 40 music. A cappella singing is not allowed.
2. Sight-reading Exam: (Rhythmic & Melodic) Sight-reading will include all note values, down to the sixteenth note. You may read on numbers, solfege
or a neutral syllable.
3. Essay: A brief one paragraph essay on why you would like to come to the Academy. Please include musical goals and previous experience.
