Module 8,In this module I learned that Neo Behaviorism: Tolman and Bandura is

considered as a researcher, explanations provided by the basic principles of

behaviorism appeared not to satisfy all learning scenarios. New theories came

into view which maintained some of the behaviorist concepts but excluded others

and added new ideas which later came to be associated with the cognitive views

of learning. The neo-behaviorists, then, were a transitional group, bridging the

gap between behaviorism and cognitive theories of learning. Neo behaviorism

contributes two researcher and behaviorists they are Tolman’s Purposive

Behaviorism and Bandura Social-Learning Theory. In Tolman’s Purposive

Behaviorism it includes goal-directedness, cognitive maps, latent learning and

intervening variables. Tolman’s Purposive Behaviorism usually people who work

in a maze activity which stated in the module of this activity found out the second

maze easier. This is because they saw that the two mazes were identical, except

that the entrance and exit points were reversed. Their experience in doing Maze A

helped them answer Maze B a lot easier so there is comparison happen between

the two mazes. These mental maps help them respond to other things or tasks

later, especially if they see the similarity. You may begin to respond trial and error

(behavioristic) but later your response becomes more internally driven (cognitive

perspective). This is what neo behaviorism is about. It has aspects of

behaviorism, but it also reaches out to the cognitive perspective. In Bandura

Social-Learning Theory involves with the principles, modeling, four conditions for

effective modelling. Both theories are influenced by behaviorism (which is


focused on external elements in learning), but their principles seem to also be

reflective of the cognitive perspective (focused on more internal elements).

That neo behaviorism is like a process that you need to be solve it contains trial

and error for you to know the behavior of a certain learner. When we relate it to

teaching, teachers try trial and error procedure to know what’s the individual

behavior that his/her learner adopt. In making trial and error there is connection

happen to some up and gather data so that you can conclude better

understanding on what the behavior is and how it is helpful to the learner.
