Here is a checklist of few factors that you should consider before
buying the right inverter and battery for your home -

 i) Your Power requirement - It is important to know what is the

total power requirement or which appliances will run at the time
power failure. Simpler appliances like fan, lights have lesser
power requirement when compared to a refrigerator or an AC.

 ii) VA Rating of your inverter - VA of an inverter is its volt

ampere rating. It is the power supplied by the inverter to the
various appliances. Most inverters are 60%-80% efficient. In
other words, their power factor is 0.6-0.8. The VA rating of the
inverter is power required by your appliances divided by the
power factor.

For example, if you need 550 watts power and average

efficiency of the inverter is 70%, the VA rating you are looking at
should be (550/0.7) or 785 VA. In the market 800 VA inverters
are available, which will be suitable for you.

iii) Battery support - In order to know the capacity of the

battery, you need to divide the total power requirement by the
battery voltage (in Volts).

For example, your power requirement is 550 watts and you need
it for 4 hours with a battery of 12 V, the battery size will be
(550*4/ 12) = 183 Ah.
