Design of composite bridge along Baitadi Darchula Road over Jamadigad river in Baitadi

INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT WORK

This report on “Design of Composite Bridge along Baitadi Darchula Road over Jamadigad River
in Baitadi” has been prepared by BCE 2064 Batch of Kantipur Engineering College, Dhapakhel,
Lalitpur as their Final Year Project as assigned on the syllabus of Tribhuwan University. This project
work is the application of integrated knowledge of various topics learned during four year course.
This project work focuses on the study of survey reports prepared before and has the detailed design
of the composite bridge structures i.e. restrained slab, plate girders, bearing, pier and abutment, and
foundation over the Jamadigad River. The permanent bridge of single lane and double span is
designed as our project work.

PROJECT SITE AND PREVIOUS DESIGN

The project site is located over Jamadigad River in Baitadi- Darchula section in Mahakali zone which
is at Far-Western Region of Nepal near to the Indian Border. The bridge lies in the north-east part of
Baitadi district and south-east part of Darchula district at 29 0 38’ 25” latitude and 800 30’ 50”
longitudes.
The previous report on which base the bridge is being constructed at the site suggests the construction
of Steel Truss Bridge of single span and single lane. Due to low traffic flow assumed and narrow
section, the steel truss bridge had been thought suitable at the site.

OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT WORK

The final year project on any structural design is done to get thorough knowledge about the
analysis and design of the structure.
Following are the main objectives of us to carry out the project work on the ‘design of composite
bridge structure.’
 To be able to understand the hydrological study and analysis of river section in regarding
to the design of bridges.
 To get knowledge about the processes and methods of geomorphological and geological
study and investigations.
 Get familiar with the loads and loading conditions occurring in the bridge deck.
 Know the detail design processes for
I. Superstructures of bridge {slab and beams(main girder and cross girder)}
II. Bearings
III. Substructures of bridge {piers and abutments}
IV. Foundations {pile foundation}
 Get familiar with the IRC Codes- 5, 6, 21, 22, 40, 78 and 83 which are used as basis for
bridge design.
 Finally complete all the analysis and design of bridge structure.

ASSIGNMENTS OF PROJECT
 Study topographic, geological, and hydrological and geotechnical condition of bridge site
from previous reports.
 Carryout design and detailing of two span Composite Bridge suitable for the bridge site.
 Design suitable bearing.
 Design suitable pier and abutment.
 Design suitable foundation.
 Prepare typical drawing of a plate girder with all its components, a Cross Beam, a Pier,
an Abutment, a Bearing and a Footing required for the construction of the selected bridge
type.

CLLIENT’S REQUIREMENT

 Traffic lane : Single Lane Bridge

 Footway : No footway required
 Wearing Surface : Asphalt Concrete
 Bridge Type : Permanent Composite Bridge
 Bridge Live Load : As the provision on codes
 Vertical Clearance : Sufficient for debris flow

SOURCE OF DATA

As the survey and investigations required for the analysis and selection of bridge type was
already completed by the government, we took the report of the study from Department of Roads
and acquired all the necessary data from the report. The report was prepared by consultancy
named ‘Soil Test Pvt. Ltd.’ in February 2006.
The report was named as ‘FINAL REPORT ON DETAILED ENGINEERING SURVEY, SOIL
INVESTIGATION AND DESIGN OF JAMADI BRIDGE IN BAITADI DISRICT.’

METHODOLOGY OF PROJECT WORK

Different methods were considered in analysis and design of composite bridge structures and
referring to various codes and books.
 The data for topographical, geological, geo-technical, hydrological and traffic analysis
are abstracted and studied from above mentioned report.
 Final drawing of cross-section of river at bridge axis, and design parameters in
geological, geo-technical and hydrological analysis are obtained from same report.
 The bridge deck, number of spans, number of lane and requirement of footpath is fixed as
assigned.
 IRC Class AA (tracked and wheeled load) and IRC Class A loads are used for design
purpose.
 Since the Jamadigad River is seasonal and remains almost dry during winter and the
height of bridge deck from river bed is also less, the shored method of construction of
composite bridge is done. This causes less depth of beam required and is easy for
construction.
 The positioning of live loads is carried out by moving the loads and drawing Influence
Line Diagrams at different positions of bridge deck.
 Pigeaud’s Method was applied for the analysis of restrained slab and its RCC design was
done based on Limit State Theory.
 Courbon’s Method and Little & Morice Method are used for lateral load distribution in
the bridge deck.
 Massyonet Method was used for analysis of cross beams.
 The design of beams (plate girders) was completed in two stages. In the first stage, the
design was done considering only Dead load and Superimposed Dead loads whereas in
second stage the design was done in consideration of dead loads and live loads
considering impact factor.
 The use of IRC Codes- 5, 6, 21, 22, 40, 78 and 83 and IS 800-1984 were used as
reference to bridge structures design.
